Conversion Beamers and Heavy Conversion Beamers

Lord Blackwood

So Im curious as to what  the best platforms for Conversion Beamer  and Heavy Conversion Beamer Weapons are.

I was thinking predators would be ideal right?  You  get the heavy conversion beamer and you just stick em far back on the board and let them bomb things?  You  dont have to take dozer blades or anything since you  prolly will only pivot them at worst ?

I reckon contemptors are a bad idea for this  since youll likely be moving them a lot ?

Anyway  hopefully someone whos used the weapons a bit more can let me know what direction to go in.

Can heresy tech marines not ride a bike? In 40k I've put a bike riding relentless conversion beamer to great use. He's mobile enough to stay at extreme range where the weapon is most useful and can exploit good fire arcs too. Also, mink saves keep him alive long enough to hit more than couple of times if you're lucky.

A Forge Lord can; hell he can even ride a Jetbike.

But Normal Techmarines are just an Elite Non-IC Selection that has no access to bikes, Jump packs or TDA. Thats what the Forge Lord is for.

Think Apothecary to Primus Medicae.

Even then I probably wouldnt since a Forge Lord will usually be in a Close-Ranged unit; not skirting in the backfield with his Beamer for S10 Shots.

Unless thats what you want to do but then your kinda wasting some of his utility.

I think the Predator is the best option. You get a Large Blast on a Tank for the price of a Small Blast on a Character. Plus, you can squadron them up to 3, which is a flexibility you don't have with Forge Lords.

Contemptors suffer because of price. And because they are a Walker, you want the ability to stomp forward and smash face in combat - the Firing Calibration rule stops this from happening.

Now if only you could upgrade both weapons on a Contemptor to a HCB then it would be worth it just for the awesome model...

I have a mobile unit of three conversion beamer Magi I use with Mechanicum, and honestly the minimum effective range is a killjoy.  You do not want this on anything that you want punching stuff in the face, so I'd leave it for the tanks.

Anyone actually tried to model one on a Pred?

The Pred Executioner comes with the option for it:

alternatively find someone who bought the dune crawlers for a 40k mech army who doesn't need the nice large one that is one of tis weapon options

I ran a pair of HCB predators in my last game. If you have POTMs you can even load them up with sponsons to give them even more firepower. It's spendy though. We found them effective, but only because we knew what we were going up against ahead of time.

If you know you're facing off against medium range anti tank like rapiers or venators, then the HCB predator is a good option. That said, the real limiting factor is that AP4 on the second weapon profile. Strength 8 isn't bad, but as soon as somebody is within 48"  everybody gets a save and the tank is suddenly much less useful. Not being ordinance is also a big bummer.

I like sitting them in a table corner with their flanks protected by each other and the board. Good for sniping off long shots, provided you're canny enough to leave empty avenues and fire lanes during set up. 3 Large S10 AP1 Blasts are something to make many units think twice about attempting to cross a no-mans land - especially if you can pin them in place with Assail/Graviton or even get a flank on a Spartan, Cover Save or no.
