Saa
Greetings Frater. Like a lot of people, I listen to music or podcasts while I paint. My mind has a propensity to wander during particularly long sessions ...... perhaps it's the fumes from the paint thinners for the airbrush, and often during the songs I have on, scenes from the Heresy will play out. So I'm curious if anyone else has any particular tracks that are evocative of any events in the Horus Heresy. I'll give examples of what I mean..... The most recent time this occurred to me was whilst listening to The Imperial Truth podcast (a 30k podcast) and during a break they played David Bowies 'Starman'. The destruction of Monarchia in A Dembski-Bowdens 'The First Heretic' ran through my head to the track. Particularly the Ultramarines gunning down civilians during the chorus. The innocence of the tune and lyrics are appropriately dark and sinister for such an event. Another example is Stop by a Pink Floyd. The lines 'I wanna go home, take off this uniform and leave the show. And I'm waiting in this cell because I have to know, have I been guilty all this time' make me think of Magnus the Red secluded away on Prospero, reeling at the magnitude of what is happening....awaiting the arrival of the Wolves. My final example (otherwise I'll fill pages with my rambling) is Showdown by Pendulum. This song is designed for a fight scene done and dusted but every time I hear it, the titanic clash between Horus and Sanguinius plays out (bet you thought I was going to say the Emperor?). The song progresses through blows and counterattacks, pauses for breath and redoubled fury and ends in a manner where you can almost visualise Horus' final blow and the Emperor bursting in to witness it! Anyway, my point / question to you Frater is this - What songs do you associate with specific scenes in the Heresy? Not what songs do you ascribe to a particular legion, but to a particular event. I've not put any links to any of the songs as I don't want to clutter the thread with YouTube links but If you're interested you can find any of the above songs there and I'd be curious to see if anyone agrees with my interpretations as well as any you have of your own. Soldier of Dorn
While there're no specific pieces I have in mind, the opening sequences of Betrayer always manages evoke both the beginning of a film and haunting, ghostly, music, giving way to silence and a quite march as the scene shifts to Lorgar. The destruction at Calth in Know No Fear brings to dramatic and pounding themes in a minor key, with cymbals and lots of percussion. That's pretty much it, though. Vazzy
Honestly? When I think of the White Scars, especially on Scars when Khan rebuffs Russ, I hear Kendrick Lamar "The Spiteful chant". The lines, "I know a lot of people who smile at my face, but talk behind my back whenever I'm gone. When they call my number I don't ever pick up, I don't owe you :cuss, leave me alone." Reminds of The Khan so much. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/318886-scenes-from-the-heresy/#findComment-4295441 Share on other sites
ThatOneMarshal
See when I think of the white scars I immediately think of this: Well, any loud rock music really. That might actually work a bit more for the blood angels. I'm not sure about night lords or dark angels though. Saa
Great now I have Starman in my head. Love it.And now put it to the cold, clinical and 'matter of fact ' gunning down of the civilians that ignored the evacuation of Monarchia by the Ultramarines. Chillingly apt.
