Heat Stained Barrels

Hey all, I've been trying to find any guides on painting heat effects on barrels but i haven't been able to find any actual paints used in the guides or only a few.

The closest idea i got to what i should get is the base metal colour (I have a variety of Vallejo Air metals so that wouldn't be a problem), a bronze (i already had Vallejo Game Air Bright Bronze), a purple, a blue, and a black (some engine soot pigments would probably do the job right at the end after all the other paints go down).

So what would be the best Purple and Blue paints to get the metal heat effect? I have been leaning towards Vallejo Game/Model Air paints.

These were the ones i already have, not really sure if any of those would be close to what's needed;

Vallejo ModelAir: French Blue, Light Sea Blue, Insignia Blue

Vallejo GameAir: Warlord Purple, Hexed Lichen

I actually don't paint barrel staining with colors, I simply use glazes/stains/washes of the appropriate colors. Use a sepia, purple and blue glaze, once you are done with the blue, put the brightest silver you've got (I prefer Vallejo Metal Color White Aluminum or Chrome, or a bright platinum - you may even try to make a bright platinum/silver by mixing a little white + bright silver + metallic medium) as a fine edge highlight around the tip of the barrel, and then do another light blue glaze over that.

I wrote a quick guide back when I was building my Knight.

This is for brass, but for the most part it's the same color variations. The only thing that might not apply as much is the band of brighter silver at the very hottest edge of the effect. That's actually quite pronounced on real-world examples I've seen, but hobbyists usually skip it because it can seem counter-intuitive. I spent a lot longer on the barrel of my melta cannon if you want to look at a smoother example. Same steps, but just worked in thinner layers and took my time.

Thanks for all of the replies, It's given me a lot to look over.

This is the best tutorial I have found on the subject:

cheers!

This video looks pretty much like i wanted to achieve with the heat effect, the two colours mentioned were "Schmincke aero color basis cyan 405" and "Schmincke aero color violet 305", what do you guys think they would translate to in GW (or vallejo, or any other paint series)? normally I'd try for a paint compatibility chart, but this brand doesn't seem to have anything like that, or have a hex code to try look it up.

One of my mates uses a Tamiya set  for a similar effect - it's Weathering Master Set D

Anyone airbrush the washes on?  At very low PSI to prevent runs?

I haven't tried running washes through my airbrush, but have used most of the washes above to create the effect and found it very time consuming.  Hoping an airbrush can speed the effect up without purchasing new colors.
