Though thy crest be shorn or shaven... - XIX Legion Raptors

Greetings all

It wouldn't be a Raven Guard plog without a E. A. Poe quote, so now that it's done...  - this be my new project.

I've just listened to the Raptor audiobook, and there it was: my HH RG themed force just laid bare in front of me.

But who are the Raptors, might you ask?

A central story-arc to the raven Guard fluff, Raptors are the 'Training' Company of the Legion XIX, post Istvaan V.

Having collected the entire primarch project's genetech from the Emperor, Corax sets out to rebuild the Raven Guard. At first the results exceed all expectations: bigger, faster, stronger, smarter Astartes are produced (the 'smooths'), effectively an improved version of Astartes.

Something something Alpha Legion something, and the mk.II geneseed gets spiked and the clean samples stolen.

Late implanted recruits suffer varying degrees of mutation; some are driven to madness and others turned into grotesque aberrations. Some however retain combat effectiveness despite their plight (the 'roughs'), complete the accelerated programme and are moved into active duty. Under Corax's aegis they are treated as equals to any other Raven Guards and given access to same equipment levels, with techmarines proving skillfull in adjusting power armour to their mutated bodies ('...and that, children, is how the legend of Mk.V is born').

Why the Raptors?

+A legion within the legion: They're slightly off the beaten track in terms of RG as they are not (or less) defined by the Istvaan V massacre than the other Raven Guard companies. In fact Corax put them under the command of the only senior officer NOT to have experienced the massacre first hand, and is the least affected by the sombre outlook of the survivors. There will be a time to model Istvaan Vets, or shattered legionaires, but for now I'd rather do 'clean', resupplied, marines

+A proud successor: 2nd Founding Chapter 'the Raptors' has a long history in 40k - it'll be fun trying to 'bridge' Legion XIX and the Raptors Chapter, via modelling etc.

+SuperAstartes:

First venture into truescaling: all the smooths will get the battleplate-stretcher treatment to stand out amongst mere transhumans.

+Loyal monsters:

Aside from wulfen, loyal mutants are a bit 'unimperial' in the best of days, so are a fun theme to model and convert.

+The rough with the smooth:

At squad level it'll be a challenge to try and bind fairly strikingly different models together to achieve squad cohesion.

So there it is, my new HH force... pics will follow shortly :-)

First 'prototype' is shaping up

I settled for 2x Heavy bolters with the sniper veteran skill for the first squad. second squad will have 2x Missile launchers with tank hunters.

Or maybe fearless. Not sure. But I'll get both heavy weapon options

+Update+

The first prototype is now primer ready - settled on a new head, and swapped the heavy bolter for a Plastic one.

Heavy Weapons being by far the most painful to assemble, I moved onto the next 3 models

A second heavy bolter in 'textbook' MkV (if there is such a thing). Again plastic heavy bolter bolter.

Missile launchers in pure mk IV and mk VI. These were fun, and i'm pleased with how they turned out.

http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww227/MinkGoblin/Mobile%20Uploads/20160417_155753_zpsx9yjzo0m.jpg

As far as the plan goes, the armour split will be 50% MkVI (issued almost exclusively to Raptors, according to fluff), 25% mk IV, and 25% other marks.

Pure MkII nuncio Vox finished

3 mk VI Raptors finished

1 mk IV Vexilia 'rough'

http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww227/MinkGoblin/Mobile%20Uploads/20160417_003809_zpspw0z9d5o.jpg

1 mk V 'rough'. Still need more bony protrusions from both arms, went with 'naked' Rampagers/Khârn arms and a chaos warrior head. The Axe hand is a wulfen hand. Overall please with the 'Angron like' pose, and how it turned out, as it was the first 'moderate mutation' marine I did.

http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww227/MinkGoblin/Mobile%20Uploads/20160417_171700_zpsuvcer5g3.jpg

2 roughs concepts, that still need work. There's potential in the Genestealer cult scults (roughly same bulk as astartes) and in the Wulfen kit.

Perfect this, Fulgrim...

Not a Dark Angel veteran

http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww227/MinkGoblin/Mobile%20Uploads/20160417_163356_zpsuluyh7nt.jpg

All in all, just need 2 sergeants, and 5 more marines to have the 2 Compulsory troop choices of a chosen duty strikeforce. Should be ready for ETL :-)

ETL Update

All 20 Raptors in my ETL vow now assembled... bar one who drives me nuts. The quandary is on what to use as 'modesty piece' to finish him off. I'm not confident in my GS skills enough to scult a loincloth from scratch, and can't find models in roughly the same pose to mimic. Most of the bits out there are too static for the pose. The original kit's full of wolf tails and not really adjustable. Any suggestions will help.

Rather than let it be the obstacle that keeps the whole project on halt, I've moved on with the rest.

First 5 mk vi marines now basecoated! A small step for a man, etc.

http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww227/MinkGoblin/IMG_0055_zpszhwwjbfq.jpg

I still need to figure out a decent scheme, and practice 'alabaster white' skintone, so figured I'd start with the helmeted ones first.

Hope to post progress soon, as I have plenty more to vow for, hopefully all assembled by the time this vow is painted.

Havent read any of the RG books or the audio dramas (although did hear the sample for Raptors and was tempted to pick it up) but I like the look of this project so far. Your marines are also suitably packing alot of gear which seems right in my mind when it comes to equipping Legionnaries.

The gear serves 2 purposes - the first is a nod to 40k raptors with their modern, special forces feel (a lot of raptor fraters on these boards go the extra mile with riggings, camo and accessories). The second is more practical, as putting a 1mm spacer at the waist joint for truescaling leaves a 1mm gap under the belt that requires filling, so all these accessories come in as a blessing for a nice and easy way to mask the gap.

Another day, another model done - 18 to go

That wulfen conversion was quite a pain to finish - but it got there in the end !

Another smooth finished, this time Mk V armour with Heavy Bolter. I used the specialist legion icon to denote suspensors. 16 more to go...

Quite fancy painting a rough now to break up monotony. Flesh over Steel...

The first 'rough' is completed... finally settled for a proper raven guard pale skin recipe: Black undercoat, flayed one flesh base, Agrax wash, then highlight with flayed one, pallid wytch all the way to white.

13 to go...

Hadn't noticed this thread, but kudos on the Corvus - think it's the first conversion I've really seen, very Cheyenne with the upper launchers !

And is that a 'stealer Cult head on the latest fella ? In the WIP pic I thought he had a beak, ala plague doctor style, and it feels a missed opportunity. Could be an idea for future hooded types ?

Indeed, it is the hybrid with the tongue sticking out.

Funny you should mention beaks... those 20 were built last year (I'm a slow painter), but I jumped on the tzeengor beaks when they released to do just that for the next unit (furies) smile.png

mk ii vet sgt finished

will probably end up reposing him, he's hanging back too much

http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww227/MinkGoblin/IMG_0123_zpsa79il1xz.jpg

Technically not a raptor, but the lone survivor of a destroyer squad whose terminus status is revoked and is given squad command in this new and untrained company. Moritat promotion will have to wait
