JeffTibbetts
Hey all. I sprayed some Future gloss over a couple Space Hulk termies to seal them, since they get handled a lot. To dull the paint back down, I sprayed them with a thin coat of Lahmian Medium which worked quite well. Perhaps TOO well. They look just very slightly dusty. I have a 3rd Term I sprayed with Testors Dull Coat which is great, but I prefer to spray through my airbrush. I was thinking it might be possible to add a little touch of 'Ard Coat next time, to bring the matte finish back just a tiny bit. Has anyone ever tried this? If so, what ratio would you suggest? I was thinking of starting with 1 part AC to 3 parts LM, and then thinned as usual. What do y'all think? captainblow
I often mix matt varnish with gloss varnish 50-50 to create satin varnish. I have no experience with using matt medium for sealing, but I'd imagine your idea would work just fine. Try it and let us know. JeffTibbetts
Well, the actual sealing is done with the Future, and the matte is just to take the gloss out. 50/50 seems almost too gloss, but who knows? I imagine I'll have to play around with the mix a bit. SW1
Out of interest do you use your airbrush for the future? What do you use to clean it with if you do? Can't see varnish going through the airbrush as an easy clean afterwards. JeffTibbetts
I did, yeah, and I've done it before with no issues. It's the gloss of choice for the scale modeling crowd. I cleaned it the same as any other paint: shoot a little water through, then a few drops of airbrush cleaner (I use Tamiya) and then a little more water, then break it all down and clean it in pieces before assembling again. Future is water soluble and cleans up nicely. Need to get my head around using it and just do it. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/319405-sealing-with-ard-coat-and-lahmian-medium/#findComment-4315030 Share on other sites
JeffTibbetts
Yeah, I played around with a cheap one from Amazon first and sort of got the kinks out. I just graduated to a Sotar 20/20 a while back and I'm enjoying it. I still mostly use it for just basecoats and whatnot, but that's partially just because it suits my painting style.
