Fytharin
I am looking for some inspiration from you guys, I have a project that includes a banner I've borrowed from the ogre kingdoms kit that I think will look really nice. My problem is I've never done a freehand banner before. I've seen quite a few awesome examples around this forum and was hoping to hear from you guys how you planned it out before putting paint to model. Did you sketch it out with pen/pencil first, did you use transfer paper, etc; pics are always welcome and definitely want to hear your planning process. This is the flag I will be painting on by the way in case anyone was wondering the type of canvas I had to work with. For the most part it's a nice flat, blank piece of plastic. There's no existing pattern on it. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/319453-freehand-banners/ Share on other sites
Slave to Darkness
Every freehand banner Ive done for my Chaos I just cracked on with, though looking back now Id say at least sketch it out on paper, half way through painting Id figured out a few shortcuts that would have made it easier if I doodled it out first. Also what kind of design are you thinking of doing? Nice choice of banner as well, I got one put aside for a dreadnought, not sure what Im gonna do with it though. Fytharin
Mines going on my stonehirn pred conversion. It'll hang off the body of the turret and over the shoulder I think. I was thinking some old Wolf heraldry. I used to do hyper realistic pencil sketches back during my school days but never anything with paint so this will be new for me. PeteySödes
I like to sketch it out first a few times for sure. When painting I find it best to break it down into its basic shapes then progressively add more detail. I like to use both the color of whatever your adding as well as going back and using the background color too to clean up Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/319453-freehand-banners/#findComment-4311923 Share on other sites
Wispy
I'll say one thing about banner free-handing: so many get it wrong and end up flying '3 wolf howling' t-shirts. Or painting 80s vans. Keeping it stylized, mostly silhouettes, is important. Simple shapes. Low choice in colors. Sketch out the shapes to start with a pencil. I have a couple examples: http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/uu84/Matrias/IMG_2793_zpsb37c05d8.jpg http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/uu84/Matrias/IMG_2790_zpscb6256a9.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/319453-freehand-banners/#findComment-4311974 Share on other sites

captainblow
Some great models dude. And I agree a good example of banners, simple yet striking. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/319453-freehand-banners/#findComment-4312008 Share on other sites
Wispy
oh, I found pics of my first freehand attempt. I think I end result was too cartoony with this one (which happens when you depict the marine, I think) so I abandoned it. http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/uu84/Matrias/IMG_2013.jpg I layed out the composition it out in MS paint before doing a sketch onto the banner and painting it. http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/uu84/Matrias/banner_prototype.png Rockstar McLightningsword ultimately was too over the top. Otherwise, the stylized wolf standing menacingly in the flames was very successful. Wraithwing
Best advise I can give is get a really sharp pencil and sketch out the rough design you want to paint onto the banner itself (the pencil shows up best on black). Then, it's a matter of filling in the sketch with paint. Surreal Cruelty
IMG_0893 by SurrealCruelty, on Flickr I used a piece of art tape for the diamond background but the rest is all freehand... I used this as a sort of guide for all the freehand I do on my wolves. http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/184639-freehanding-the-space-wolves-symbols/ I would also consider trying just painting the design on something like a piece of plasti-card once you have a sketch and a plan.
