Aaron's prose is powerfully eloquent

MoM and Emperor's Gift were rather tiresome to me (hard to get through) because of the direction/concepts. They didn't click with me.

Same. MoM is horribly disjointed. I do see what Aaron tried to do where (and that doesnt make it a bad novel)  - but to many quick absolutions and dropping of continuous plotline etc.

Emperor's Gift was amazing - especially that brotherhood teleport to the surface and seconds counter. But after the blade breaking it went downhill.

Master of Mankind worked for me, though I find things twisting in my perceptions of characters every time I go back to it.

Exactly

You will not be disappointed!

Chris has become my favorite writer.

Along with Aaron, he is one of few authors, who is able to hit the spot regardless of the chapter he is writing.

I love his Wolves since War of the Fang.

Scars made the Ws an interesting and awesome and Wraith of Iron is just pure grimdarkness.

Currently reading Leman Russ and I'm enjoying it very much. The scene where Leman threatens the Lion? Glorious :biggrin.:

I am on The Path of Heaven, loving it... Scars was great.

Scars was great. Path of Heaven is simply brilliant and true masterpiece! In my humble opinion :thanks:

Finished Path of Heaven, enjoyed it :smile.:.

Wow - simply enjoyed. I thought it was much better than Scars?

What do you want? Unlike you I am happy to just enjoy a book I don't need to review the book and post it on goodreads... :).

Last time I will reply to you as well back on the ignore list you go :)

Did you read/listened to the short set in between Scars and PoH (brotherhood of the Moon and Allegiance)?  I read the whole Scars arc recently and it just got better and better.

I have listened to Brotherhood of the Storm, Scars and The Path of Heaven.

I will be happy to listen to anything regards the 5th Legion :)

Brotherhood of the Moon, Allegiance, Grey Talon, and even Little Horus all fit the WS arc

Same as the Last Son of Prospero. Probably the best short in years.

And Last Son of Prospero.

I love that a 99p short released on Christmas Eve (Day in NZ) caused the biggest 40K upset this side of PoD.

Just curious - what you meant by 'caused the biggest 40K upset this side of PoD'?

that's he is not a primogenitor of Blood Ravens?

Man, this thread.

Each time I come in I'm shocked by how fondly I remember these stories.

Maybe I'm going mad, but it feels in my memory like Chris has managed to create a set that is itself a masterpiece within the already decent series.

A re-read grows ever higher on my to-do list.

Add Rebirth by Wraight to the list

Explains Arvida's presence

Yess - it was a nice story, which still hasn't given us an answer about timeholes -
Khârn being on Prospero - being at Nuceria

As of Scars, the WE and WB are only heading towards Ultramar. So Nuceria is months away.

I feel like I've asked this before, if so apologies but I can't find the post...

Is it possible for those more in the know than me to suggest a reading order for all this? I'm trying to get a better feel for the Vth for the purposes of my DIY, and I really want to read everything I can. As per some basic suggestions from you guys I've now read Scars and Brotherhood of the Storm, but am now realising I may be watering down my experience by not being purposeful in my reading order.

Help? It looks like there could be as many as 15+ 40K, HH, shorts, novellas etc etc that involve the Scars across various characters and timelines, are there definitive 'groupings' that occur in canonical order?

My recommendation for reading order:

Rebirth

Brotherhood of the Storm

Scars

Brotherhood of the Moon

Grey Talon

Little Horus

Allegiance

The Path of Heaven

Last Son of Prospero

That should get you 98% of the story without going off into wildly tangentially related stuff like Thousand Sons and Vulkan Lives.

The vast majority of 40k stories, that aren't part of a dedicated series, don't really have dates attached to them, and so can be read as standalone stories.  I've read Hunt for Voldorius and Overfiend.  Neither was that great.  Overfiend was alright.  I would say the White Scars of 30k are WAY more interesting than their 40k representation.

My recommendation for reading order:

Rebirth

Brotherhood of the Storm

Scars

Brotherhood of the Moon

Grey Talon

Little Horus

Allegiance

The Path of Heaven

Last Son of Prospero

This is a fine list...

I would shift Allegiance to right after Scars and right before Brotherhood of the Moon

In Allegiance, the Sagyar Mazan trials form the backdrop to Arvida's story

In Brotherhood of the Moon, the reader actually "witnesses" Torghun Khan's trial via a transcript

Does that make sense to you Jareddm? I could be missing something

I guess I put Allegiance so far down because I felt it spanned a decent length of time beyond the trial.  But I suppose it can be said that Allegiance runs parallel to the events of the other three stories in between Scars and Path of Heaven.  I just wanted to keep the whole Sagyar Mazan plot listed together.

True, but still a little bit unexplaineble - cause Khârn did not make a detour to Prospero.

Much more interesting. They are not even comparable.

I will grab all I can thanks .
