b1soul
Were the early Legions (e.g. the Terran Ist Legion) involved? Any clues or hints available? I know the Custodes and the Emp himself are the likely culprits...but I think the earliest Legionaries and the latest TW overlapped, no? Forward Assist
That'd certainly be an awkward conversation: 'So you want us to wipe out your last batch of genetically modified warriors?' 'Yes. Their time has passed. Warriors of the II Legion, it is time to purge them.' 'Okay... ...you wouldn't do that to us though, right?' 'Nah, bro. We're total buds.' Calas Typhon
only reference i can think of is the Warhounds exterminating a knot in the Cerberus insurrection. they basically piled on them and crushed them like humans would do a space marine. Flint13
I thought that it was more the Thunder Warriors were designed (either intentionally or as a "happy" accident of their unstable experimental physiology) to sort of biologically degrade and die off after awhile? That certainly seems to be the case from the couple left alive on Terra in Outcast Dead. It would make sense from the Emperor's side of things too. He could still get rid of them, but even maintain a facade of striving to save them. "I'm working day and night to halt this rapid biological degradation, my sons, but nothing is working!" That'd seems to be a lot less likely to cause a crazy uprising than just trying to off everyone like he was cramming incriminating documents into a paper shredder. Though now I've used that simile, I can't *not* see the Emperor doing exactly that... RandomMarine
I just hope taranis gets some screen time during the seige. Some along the lines of My father betrayed us but we built this empire and we will defend it Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/319866-thunder-warrior-culling/#findComment-4323224 Share on other sites
Dumah
...OR, "My father betrayed us so we'll help tear this empire down!" That would be neat. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/319866-thunder-warrior-culling/#findComment-4323227 Share on other sites

Beaky Brigade
only reference i can think of is the Warhounds exterminating a knot in the Cerberus insurrection. they basically piled on them and crushed them like humans would do a space marine. Yeah that is from book one betrayal, but those were specifically Thunder warriors who had already been imprisoned for some undisclosed crime rather than a culling of a whole force of them. Sending your best warriors to kill your previously best warriors in open battle seems a bit wasteful, I imagine they were just worn down by attrition and the end of recruitment, possibly deliberately sent into the meat grinder. RandomMarine
Its been a while since I read outcast dead but I'm pretty sure that its was said that they pretty much all died during the last true battle of the unification and that the astropath was shocked when he realised who taranis and his buddy are. Did we ever find our what happened to those two and the thunder warrior geneseed that was created? Imo by the way his was described as the greatest thunder warrior and his evident genius (reverse engineered gene seed on his own with no help from big E) when thunder warriors are sipposed to be blunt instruments and the way he slaps Astarte's about it entirely possible taranis is a proto primarch rather than proto astartes. b1soul
I remeber Outcast Dead mentions a culling, could I be misremebering Letting them naturally deteriorate (as Thunder Warriors tend to do over a relatively short time) and go extinct does make more sense...but I could've sworn I read something about a culling. I think Taranis mentions it in Outcast Dead. The TW on Cerberus must have been freak survivors (outliers who deteriorate much more slowly than typical TW) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/319866-thunder-warrior-culling/#findComment-4323873 Share on other sites
CaptainStabby
Outcast Dead was a bit of a retcon as to the culling. I don't recall it being mentioned before that, only that they were designed to deteriorate as they were never meant to have a purpose past the unification of Terra. b1soul
Before outcast dead, I am quite sure TW were supposed to be weaker than SM After Oucast Dead, they became stronger but prone to physical and mental malfunction Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/319866-thunder-warrior-culling/#findComment-4324071 Share on other sites
Ishagu
There's no actual evidence they were killed off, only some mumblings. I believe their extraordinary abilities came at the cost of very short lifespans. NoLats_McGee
I'd love to see some TW popping up during the heresy. Especially if they formed their own blackshield band. It's very unlikely but a man can dream. The whole 'space pirate' thing suits them perfectly and is a great throwback to the backwards-cap marines in rogue trader. Audemus
Lets be clear you little girly space marine men, you better pray the geneseed has been destroyed or you can look forward to seeing us in the future in all our manly muscle bulging glory. That is an awesome idea...maybe a small band who figure out how to extend their life-spans and recruit new members?
