Blackshield Mechanicum

Invent new stuff, isn't that against everything the Mechanicum stand for?

Individual Forge Worlds would have had the ability to choose their own side im guessing. I'd imagine that if a particular forge world wanted to do its own thing outside of the Martian hierarchy and creed but still stay loyal to the Imperium, there wouldn't be much Mars could do about it until after the Heresy and the Scouring. But, if they have some sort of STC there keeping to themselves

I'd bet Mars, both loyal and traitor, would do what they could to get hold it.

Personally my impression from the books I've read suggests that the forge worlds and even the major forged on Mars are all fairly autonomous during the 30k period. Just my reading of it though.

At work so I don't have the book in front of me, but there is mention of a Blackshield tech marine that invades Xana. (he's the one with the Sons of Horus paint scheme in the art work) I'm fairly certain it says that he was seconded to the mechanicus during Istavan and those are the same folks who helped him (and other Blackshields) infiltrate Xana.

That aside, I don't think its outside the realm of possibility to have some mech that wish autonomy but still wish the remain loyal. Xana itself was originally on the fence for the reason that they were deciding who would give them autonomy from the Martian cult. Its not the same but sets the precedent.

Forgive me, it was just an idea that had popped into my head. :D

I say 'inventing new stuff', but I'm thinking more along the lines of reverse engineering if that's a better example. For example, old Tau lore had put it out there that the Leman Russ is under engineered, as in, if you built it exactly to STC standards, it would be far more capable than it performs under Martian controlled manufacture. A struggle I have always had difficulty reconciling is how military technology can integrate things like the Noosphere, but military tactics are pre-combined arms revolution. When the idea popped up it was in relation to a completely integrated loyalist force. None of the feudal organization and dogmatic structure. The heresy seems like it would be the place where you'd see something like legion tactical squads with an integrated Castellax controlled via a squad member with a remote cortex controller, or servo skull UAVs hovering above a rapier mortar battery to triangulate distance relayed via computers.

To be honest though, now that I write it down I feel like I'm creating a problem where there isn't one, since all that is perfectly possible in the background.

Stygies VIII/Vulcanis:
"Stygies itself almost fell to heretic forces in the times of the Horus Heresy, only being saved by the intervention of the Eldar race. This event has led to Vulcanis being the home of a secretive sect within the Adeptus Mechanicus known as the Xenarites. The Xenarites are dedicated to the study and exploitation of alien technology, a policy most tech priests find offensive." ~ Codex: Skitarii page 18

I could kiss you, Vodunius.
