Clarification re: the Orbital Assault RoW

Recommended Posts

So, this RoW says any unit that has a Rhino dedicated transport may take a legion drop pod instead. I get that.

Then there's the limitation bit of the RoW that makes absolutely no sense to me. I write game design docs for a living and this just seems like a bunch of words put together with a period at the end. Super confused. Is there a FW to human translation that makes sense?

Also I don't HAVE to deploy, say Tactical squads in pods correct? It's an either/or thing.

Everything in your army must be able to deploy by deep strike. This can either be from having the rule innately (e.g. assault marines) or by purchasing a transport that has the rule (e.g. drop pods). If something cannot be deployed via deep strike (e.g. tanks) it cannot be taken as part of the army.

With the transports thing, if a unit has purchased a dedicated transport, it must begin the game deployed within it.

Hope this clears things up.

While the wording isn't the best, it isn't all that bad I think...

Limitation 1 says, as Fenris stated, that for a unit to be allowed in your army you need a means to deep strike it, so either inate (JumpPacks, or ImperialFist terminators, for example) or using a transport (a DP or Kharybdis; or even a LR if you include a THTransporter).

Limitation 2 is straightforward enough.

Limitation 3 applies only to dedicated transports, so if you purchased a non-dedicated transport (say a StormEagle or a HeavySupport Kharybdis) the unit does NOT have to deploy within. Might be against the spirit of the RoW, but it certainly is allowed... (Unless that was FAQed?)

Ok yeah I read it several times and I get now, mostly. The wording is pretty terrible. I get the innate deep strike part but the last part with the infantry/drop pod example still makes no sense to me, but I see the intent of the rule now. All deep strike, all the time.

Perfectly, yes, except I don't see how you got the dedicated transport thing from the last bit of the RAW, but I trust you, as it makes sense with the rest of the limitations. :P

I WAS looking at it in Betrayal, but I looked at the red book just now. I think what is throwing me is the second "clarification" in the first bulletpoint under limitations.

I get it now, but that example of infantry/drop pods is... less than good. Honestly if they had just had that bullet point without their "clarifications" I never would have had a problem, that was the part that was tripping me up.
