Word bearers red armour

Recommended Posts

Depends what kind of look you want. Army Painter do a deep red Spray Primer called Chaotic Red. Highlight that to taste - are you going on the red, orange or purple/pink end of the spectrum? - and then wash to tie it together and add some depth. Seems that could git 'er done pretty quickly.

Ok, in that case you'll definitely want to start as dark as something like Army Painter Chaotic Red (super conveient by virtue of being available as a spray primer and a colour-matched dropper bottle) or Vallejo Black-Red and work your way up to a mid-level red on the purple spectrum like old GW Scab Red. Unfortunately I've never found anything that quite matches that lovely colour, now it's OOP, but Scale 75 Deep Red is similar.

Copper spray paint from krylon or the cheaper rustoleum for a primer. (Not the 2x coverage type!) Do a test coat on some bare sprues so you get a feel for the coverage and don't ruin details. Wash the whole thing with nuln oil. Several times on the lower portions, or use a counter color like green or purple for the shadows, if you want that look. Dry brush a pale gold color on the upper portion for a first highlight. Then dry brush or thinly ink the whole model red. Using either Khorne Red or darker, for that dark look. Next paint all the trim, using iron belcher or similar and all soft armor and eyes as desired. Then wash the trim in nuln oil until it's the desired darkness. If you drybrushed on the red, then wash the red with Carroburg Crimson to tie the drybrush into the copper. If you inked it, then you'll want to use Druchii Violet or Nuln Oil instead, because even a dark red ink will be pretty cherry red over gold and copper.

Then chip and pigment, or not, to your hearts content.

If you don't want metallic, then base coat black, as normal. Then using Krylon or cheap Rustoleum eggshell, or flat finish spraypaint, in a rusty brown, or brick red color hit the models from overhead and then again on their front face, but at an angle. Then paint the trim, etc. as above. Then wash all non-trim areas of the model in Carroburg Crimson and highlight the now red upper faces as desired, I'd start with very thin khorne red and work brighter, but if the model is bright enough to start with, no traditional highlighting may even be required.

Then chip and pigment, or not, to your hearts content.

Also, when using any non-flat paints like eggshell, make sure to hit the model with your favorite flat varnish, and it will give you the color without the sheen. This will work for any finish, but the shinier the initial finish, the harder it will be to paint the model in general.

Runefyre.

Get your brother to try drakenhof nightshade wash. The dark blue will darken the red wihout turning it purple, but give it a really nice dark blood/ red wine colour.

Black wash is good, but it deadens the red for me.

I do not do word bearers, but I use Khorne red (scab red equivalent), which I think it the darkest red, the 1-2 washes of draken hof nightshade wash.

I then use thinned down khorne red to bring it back up and use a lighter re to highlight.

I use it mainly for weapons or tank markings, I can put pictures up later if you like

Thanks for the tip. I'll let him know, he will probably like that idea. Nuln oil can be a little flat and generic.
