Scribe
Would you Ally with Legions? AdMech? Pure Militia? I'm not sure which list would be ideal or workable. The Militia list seems poor as a stand alone. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320139-how-would-you-make-a-rogue-trader-army/ Share on other sites
GhostMalone
The militia list is actually pretty good you just need to play to its strengths. Just like solar auxilia they have a certain play style Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320139-how-would-you-make-a-rogue-trader-army/#findComment-4329619 Share on other sites
shandwen
I'd steer away from admech or any legion stuff (what little I've read of rogue traders they had little or rare support from either of those). Pure militia may be your best bet, but it is a wonky list, and one that is built around your warlord giving benefits to his guys. It is (at least from what I have read on it) a useable list, and perhaps a higher tier one at large games (cheaper tanks than anyone else). Perhaps look at the the dark age trait for rhinos and +1 str shooting. Black Cohort
When I think of a rogue trader I think of an eclectic group of units, so probably some counts as mixed in with the militia list and an allied contingent of marines. Can you ally militia and black shields? That could give you a mix of also sorts of random gear. GhostMalone
Just a question? How is militia wonky? I've just started personally building and playing militia and it's actually an easy to navigate army. I personally run gene crafted alongside survivors of the dark age and honestly you nearly on par with most armies. Also you can literally win most games by sitting more troops on an objective then the enemy can destroy. I've seen guys place 300 militia indycted levis that count as plague zombies never fall back off an objective that is if there's not a massive artillery battery shelling them. I'm looking at you John and your Iron warrior Medusas Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320139-how-would-you-make-a-rogue-trader-army/#findComment-4329632 Share on other sites
KBA
Examples of elements of the legions being bonded to Rogue Trader Militants go back a few black leather books (Crimson sons anyone?), so there's precedent. The new Rite of War for the Ultras from the new book sounds best, and makes your legion aspects the minority which is fitting. ** it does state in conquest that most RT forces consist of Solar Auxilia though, I've thought SA allying with a legion would be fitting. Anything is possible really in such a nuts setting like 30 k EDIT- oops, that's the dark compliance theme I was thinking of, not the UM rite. And as a theme it requires player consent, so that may be tricky Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320139-how-would-you-make-a-rogue-trader-army/#findComment-4329634 Share on other sites

Fire Golem
Maybe Militia and Blackshields allied? Blackshields can take some esoteric stuff that I imagine Rogue Traders using. As KBA says, there's precedent for Marines to be hanging around with Rogue Traders. Maybe Solar Auxilia instead of Militia if you wanted a more elite feel. GhostMalone
That's probably the best idea mercenaries hired to protect him during the heresy in return for supplies I could see Blackshields fighting Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320139-how-would-you-make-a-rogue-trader-army/#findComment-4329687 Share on other sites
Atia
I wouldn't make a Rogue Trader Militiant army yet. Only maybe Solar Auxilia and an allied Legions detachment (maybe blackshields to get some fancy xenos deathlocks) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320139-how-would-you-make-a-rogue-trader-army/#findComment-4329751 Share on other sites
Vodunius
It sticks in my mind someone 'in the know' said the Solar Auxilia list was in-part intended to cover Rogue Traders as much as Solar Auxilia, hence the Legate Commander/Lord Marshall having much better wargear options than the Militia Force Commander. Ishagu
Some Rogue Traders had favours with Legions and ultimately Chapters. They might be quite new and relatively poor, or they could have access to the most advanced weapons and technology from the Dark Age, as well as Xeno tech. Charlo
With a Rouge trader army pretty much anything goes. They ranged from "dude with a jump ship and a permit" all the way to "high Lords cousin twice removed with access to the family vault and he used this week's allowance to buy a regiment of Solar Auxilia and some accompanying cybernetica to go into deep space". Sol_Invictus
In the Blackshields Outlanders description it specifically mentions that some of the legionaries had served in Rogue Trader Flotillas so it would seem perfectly fluffy to me to include Legion elements in a Rogue Trader list. Brother Aiwass
IIRC the Crimson Sons Night Lords worked for a Rogue Trader, so it will not be bad to take some auxiliary legion forces imho. But I will take the main army as Solar Auxilia or militias. Ishagu
Honestly I'd use a force comprised equal parts of elite Astartes, tough Castellax and numerous infantry from Solar Auxillia, with some cool Mechanicus/SA vehicles thrown in. Some Rogue Traders had enough forces to form small empires, after all...
