Table size.

Recommended Posts

4x4 with very dense terrain makes for interesting games, you can also do 4x6 if you're allowing vehicles and the such for maneuverability.

Alright thanks!

Another question, I was thinking about making some modular pieces to get the option of moving them around, what do you think the adequate size would be for each square. I'm thinking two by two feet?

Hey guys/gals. What size gaming table would you recommend for a 500points match?

I think this is the right place to post this, if not please move it.

4x4 with high terrain as others have said.

I would make some 2x2 some 2x1 and some 1x1 for variety.

For Games under 1000pts I find 4'x4' works best.

As its more a skirmish level game

Alright, noted. I won't be using vehicles other than walkers for these games otherwise 4x4 woulf probably be too small.

I had not thought of that, good idea.

I personally prefer 1x1 tiles because of my experience with secret weapon miniatures tablescapes tiles, I feel 2x2 tiles can be somewhat limiting due to their size and aren't as modular or variable. Like Quixus said though, draw it out on paper, see how it goes, I did the same thing before I ordered my table tiles.

do you want the river modular? or no?

Generally, I would probably just make it a larger sequence of your smallest piece tiles (so if you are doing 2x2 and 1x1s and 1x2s, then it should be 1x1s. Basically, any part the river would land on, it gets the whole square for that.

Alternatively you could build your terrain squares such that any of them can interlock with an overlain river, but that could be really difficult.

Or, you can just make the river recessed below the road level and make it dive below the road or into rock at each edge

Problem with rivers isn't that you build them and place them on the table. That looks weird. You have to build everything that is NOT the river such that they are higher than the river.

For example build all your modular panels such that they are an inch or so higher then the areas you will have rivers. Add gradients and details to edges. Fill bottom of river areas with transparent blue green brown resin depending on how dirty your river is.

White dwarf when it was an actual hobby mag had articles all about this process.

I was thinking about carving out the river in the styrophoam and, as Canadia_F_H pointed out, everything else is raised an inch or so above the river itself. But, I think I might save the river for another time, because I had plans about making a swamp board aswell for fantasy and 40k so the river might be more suitable for that scenario.

With styrofoam instead of cutting a river out you can use a blowtorch. It makes a nice effect that you can the fill out with the previously mentioned resin. This techinc makes it look more natural and is a LOT easier. biggrin.png

If using this method, I strongly suggest an air mask and goggles.

And be outside or a well ventilated workspace.

And none of those things are a problem, I have air masks, goggles and a LOT of space outside :D
