Potentially Starting Up Heresy

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I have been working on my KDK army currently, but I fancy doing something that I've wanted to do for a long time. A heresy army.

I've looked everywhere for guidance, and the AoD forums have been a fantastic help. Although I do have a few questions, I know I will be starting with the B@C box. I've looked at the "Pick a Legion" thread, but it's quite bloated.

*First of all, what is the current edition of the Legiones Astartes rulebook, and is this changing any time soon?

*The next question is picking a legion. I have no idea really.

-I'm leaning towards Imperial Fists, although they seem overdone by everyone.

-WE's would've been a choice, as I love the colour scheme, but I already do a close combat army in the form of KDK.

-I think an army that could be both loyalist and traitor would be a good start. Maybe DG, SoH, even EC might be a good start.

-I really like the Ultramarines. But, they spent most of the time at the other side of the galaxy with the whole war going on. Same with the Word Bearers. Not much option other than being traitors.

-Iron Warriors may be one of the better options. I have a CSM IW army, and using the FW kits in both armies might give me some flexibility. But it is a boring colour scheme, although easy to paint....

The army I envisage is 20 man infantry and assault squads with a mix of armour, dreads, and other shooty things. I want to have a mainly shooty army with the ability to have a big unit of assault marines killing stuff (and I do like the MKIII assault marines...!).

I know I am asking a lot, but it is a big project to embark on, and I don't want to be changing my mind half way through.

Cheers all,

BM

First off, every legion had some traitors and some loyalists, so you can pretty much chose any legion you want for those purposes. Also, if you're chosen legion doesn't do what you want in the heresy, forge your own world (see what I did there tongue.png )! There's absolutely nothing wrong with coming up with your own story (like my personal ultramarines 23rd chapter). Based off what you're saying, I'd go with either iron warriors or death guard, both have good melee options but also have good shooting (not to mention killer models, I'm looking at you perturabo). You could always spruce up iron warriors paint scheme by focusing more on weathering and giving them the "been through hell" look.

The current edition of the Crusade Army List is still the same first print that combines all of the units from Books 1 through 3.  A red book just came out that updated and compiled all of the unique Legion traits, characters and rites from books 1-5. If you pick Ultramarines or Word Bearers, then book 5 would give you all the relevant Legion information plus Militia/Cults lists (plus a Calth campaign if you're interested in that sort of thing).

There have been some rumblings about a new Crusade Army List book, but nothing concrete. We have seen images of the next red book, which will contain all of the Auxilia, Militia/Cults and Knights rules.  We've also gotten some very early info on Book 7.

If a new CAL book does come out, it will mainly be for the purposes of rebalancing (a lot of hopes and dreams out there, but again nothing concrete), because the total amount of units added since its printing can be summarized as such:

Book 4 - nothing!

Book 5

Deredeo (rules available online from FW site)

Xiphon Pattern Interceptor (rules available online from FW site except book version has Ground tracking auguries as an upgrade option)

Sokar Stormbird (1000 point Lord of War that will probably cost $1000 once it's available and I'm sure they'll give you the rules to go with the duffel bag of resin)

Book 6

Leviathan Dreadnought (rules available online from FW site)

   Cortus pattern Contemptors

   Mastodon (see Stormbird)

Bunch of generic Rites of War

So whether we'll see one soon is a big unknown.  I certainly hope so, and hope to see rebalances to the entire troop section.
