The Baneful Sabres Chapter
Chapter organisation
1st Great Company Valorous – Only in death, do we earn our redemption.
2rd Great Company Vigorous – against the traitor, our blades never tire.
3rd Great Company Vigilance – We are the eyes that guard our chapter.
4th Great Company Venerable - We Honour the empire, which has forsaken us.
5th Great Company Vendetta – With our last breath, we will avenge our brothers.
The Baneful Sabres possessed a unique chapter organisation, although adhering to the codex Astarte’s limit of one thousand battle brothers; the chapter is comprised of only five companies. Each company comprises of two hundred battle brothers that deploy together on-board the great companies battle barge, under the command of a Marshal (captain) that directly commands the primus company. The secondary company is commanded by the lieutenant Marshal (less experienced captain), who’s main role is to deploy his secondary company in support of the primus company. The chapter is commanded by the first company high marshal (chapter master).
Each great company’s combat role is formed around one of the chapters five oaths: 1st Great Company Valorous is the veteran company, comprising veteran wardens (veteran sergeants/ veteran marines) and the bulk of the chapters terminators.
2rd Great Company Vigorous are close combat specialists and deploys large numbers of assault marines and attack bikes. They are also deploy newly minted marines, which are formed into large assault teams (similar to blood claws).
3rd Great Company Vigilance is responsible intelligence gathering, sabotage and hit and run missions. The 3rd company are often the first marines to be deployed, in order to take out the enemy’s supply lines and take out the enemy’s commanders. The company relies heavily on close air support to defend their strike teams.
4th Great Company Venerable are the objective holders, they possess a large tech marine detachment and have the ability set up defence lines and installations at a rapid pace. Once they are in place they are maned by many thuderfire cannons and companies dreadnaughts.
5th Great Company Vendetta act as the finial hammer blow, deploying large numbers of terminators and tank squadrons smash throe fortified positions.

Early history

The Baneful Sabres Chapter are a fleet based 8th founding chapter of the imperial fist chapter and possess a long glorious combat record in the name of the emperor of mankind. From its founding the chapter was at odds with itself and this was in no small part due to the chapter’s two primary recruitment worlds. When the chapter was formed they were given recruiting rights to two star systems Banderus and Tazad-elim; Banderus 3 was an undeveloped world of almost constant night, where fell predators stalked and hunted the planets human inhabitants. To survive on Banderus one had to be swift, keen of eye and ear and above all else have the ability to go unseen until the time was right to strike. This ment that recruits form this world tended to be careful and methodical tacticians, who relied on a solid defence and would not engage without first sabotaging and weakening their opponent. The star system Tazad-elim on the other hand, was a highly developed trade hub. The chapter only recruited from the star systems under hive gangs; recruits from theses worlds tended to be head strong and explosively aggressive, relishing in hand to hand combat and armoured assaults.
This juxtaposition with-in the chapter proved to be a great tactical advantage; with the marines from Banderus having a predisposition for defence, intelligence gathering and subversion. And the marines from Tazad-elim being head strong line breakers, ment the chapter could adapt to almost any tactical challenge. However this also callused great division with in the chapter, with Marshals often disagreeing with the correct action to be taken and would even sometimes result in officers coming to blows. This resulted in a great deal of animosity between the brothers from Banderus and Tazad-elim and Towards the end 40th millennium it became increasingly rear for a squad to have bothers from both star systems. Because of growing divisions within the chapter towards the beginning of the 36th millennium, the Chaplin convent decided that all command positions should be decided by secret ballot; weather it as the leader of a squad, a company or the entire chapter. With consensus becoming harder and harder to reach with-in the chapter, the Chaplin’s believed this would be the best way to maintain the chapters cohesion and give the marines a change to air their frustrations.

Traitor’s ascension

Markus Tylenicus ascended to rank of High Marshal in dubious circumstances. Upon the death of a High Marshal, a successor is elected to the position by the chapters Marshal’s (captains), lieutenant Marshal’s (captains), veteran wardens (veteran sergeants), wardens (sergeants), chaplains, Liberians and dreadnoughts. Any officer maybe selected by his brothers to run for election. On this occasion only two brothers where selected for the contest; Markus Tylenicus Marshal of 5th Company Vendetta and the young Titus Morinus Lt’ Marshal of 3rd Company Vigilance. Despite being only Lt’ Marshal, Titus Morinus was an exemplar of the chapters Banderosian and Tazad-elim doctrines and passions; easily adapting his command style to get the best out of any brother under his stewardship. Morinus walked a fine line and was popular with the men from both Banderus and Tazad-elim something Tylenicus was unable to achieve and this ment he was the only true threat to Tylenicus’s ambitions to lead the chapter in a new direction. Many men held great hope in their hearts, that Morinus could be the man to reunite the chapter and lead then to glory in unity, he was the youngest marine ever promoted to the rank of Lt’ Marshal and was a symbol of hope to the younger members of the chapter and a thing of envy to the older Astarte’s. With the death of the High marshal at the hands of demon prince of nurgle, Tylenicus was the eldest and most seasoned commander in the chapter; although he was far from the most likeable marine in the chapter, despite this there was on one who doubted his skill at arms or his tactical genius. As an honoured veteran he would have seemed like an ideal candidate to lead the chapter, but he also polarised tensions within the chapter; he often used derogatory slag terms for his Banderosian battle brothers and would have none of them with in his primus company. To most of the brothers from Tazad-elim Tylenicus was a chance for their voices to finally be heard, the last three high marshals had all be Banderosian born and they had grown tired of their slow methodical battle style and lasted for the carnage that they had been raised bread for.
Once the votes had been counted a tie was declared between the two aspiring high Marshals, 59 to Tylenicus, 59 to Morinus and 21 abstentions. Tylenicus was furious and ordered his men to find the names of the 21 absentee’s and bring them to heel. Chaplin convent decided to allow two days for absentee’s to submit the votes, ten did so but the result was still tied. Anger festered with in the chapter, the 2rd company marshal accused Tylenicus of attempting to strong arm the result and almost split the chapter a sunder; this bolstered support for Tylenicus in the Tazad-elim camp, as many believed the chapter above all else needed a strong Leeder who’s will would not bend. After two days of biter feuding the Chapters Chaplin convent decided that the contest should be decided with a duel. Tylenicus had no intention of losing this contest of skill and was unsure of who was the better swordsman. As Tylenicus meditated alone in his arming chamber, his mind was awash with visions of victory and glory. He prayed for the power and strength to best his opponent and his prayers were answered, but not by he who protects. The chaplain convent had set the rules for the contest, the man who draws blood from his opponent wins the round and the contest would run for seven rounds; to be shore the winner had the strength and fortitude of will to lead the chapter and to insure the chapter didn’t lose two of its greatest warriors. During the fifth round, when each man was tied Tylenicus prayed once again and was granted the strength, shattering Morinus’s sword as he thrusted hard into Morinus’s chest, piecing through into one of Morinus’s hearts and spinal column. By the skill of 3rd Company Vigilance apothecaries Morinus lived, but Tylenicus new he would still posed a threat to his ambitions as long as he drew breath; especially if Morinus ever leaded how he gained the strength to best him.
Many in the chapter disapproved of Tylenicus’s appointment to high marshal. As he took command of the 1st company and Tylenicus kept a scrutinizing eye on those he thought capable of decent; Tylenicus grow paranoid and began keeping a tyrants grip on the chapter, he had his men find the names all the men who had voted for him and recruited them as spies with-in the other 4 great companies. After he had solidified his position with in the first company, it was now time for Tylenicus to expand his influence in the wider imperium. He ordered the 5th company in secret to search for a new permeant base of operations for his dark plans, the 5th company happened upon a space hulk drifting towards the imperium. This presented Tylenicus with an opportunity; the hulk was invested with large numbers of genestealers, perhaps even enough to purge his chapter of the elements he had deep “undesirable”.
Tylenicus ordered the 1st, 2rd and 3rd companies to board the hulk and sent the 3rd deep into the heart of the genestealers nest; they took heavy losses and Morinus was gravely wounded. One of Tylenicus’s spies with in the 3rd company reported what believed to be a battle barge deep inside the hulk, but could not confirm what chapter it once belonged to. After most of the infestation had been dealt with Tylenicus ordered the 2rd and 3rd companies to resupply and rearm, both companies had taken heavy losses and had to return to the chapter recruitment worlds to bolster their numbers.
With the 2rd and 3rd companies gone and the Tyraid treat dealt, Tylenicus’s men searched the space hulk room by room in the hopes of finding something that might aid Tylenicus in his plans. His prays where answered once more, upon a more thru search of the cashed battlebarge revealed it to a lost ship of the World Eater legion; either lost during the Great Crusade or the Horus Heresy. But one find surprised and delighted Tylenicus, vast quantities of gene seed had miraculously been preserved inside the twisted wreckage. Even in his darkest dreams he had never dared to imagen an opportunity such as this one. There was enough gene seed that had survived to raise thousands of marines, enough to carve out a new empire all for himself. On the barge there was enough salvageable battle plate arm nearly hundred battle brothers, just enough to test the water and make sure the gene seed was viable. Tylenicus order twenty of his finest veteran wardens to remain behind along with four apothecaries; Tylenicus had their names add to the list of casualties so no one would question where they had gone. Before departing Tylenicus located a rogue trader and offered she lavish rewards if her and her crew would locate and make regular deliveries of suitable men to the space hulk; he told her he cared not where she found them, just as long as she was desecrate about how she acquired them.
After a number of years there where all but a hand full of new aspirants, the quality of the men the rouge trader had acquired was lacking and too few could survive the implantation process: worse still rumours had spread of the rouge trades actions, she had been sloppy and had started attacking trade convoys to source better quality stock. The Baneful Sabres where ordered to locate eldar pirates who the imperium believed to be the culprits; Tylenicus arranged a meeting with the rogue trader in a sector of space far from any prying eyes. The first company boarded and killed the crew and Tylenicus presented the head of the rogue trader to the adeptus adminisratum. He had the first company forge evidence of the ships destruction, a small squad of marines them piloted the cruiser back to the space hulk that had been given the nick name “tyrant star”. By the time the cruiser had arrived there were nearly forty new black company marines hungry for their first mission. The marines bore no marking and their armour was paint black, along with a few 1st company veterans they took the newly acquired cruiser on the hunt for derelict ships and new recruits.
After nearly two hundred and fifty years of collecting and scavenging, Tylenicus had amassed a fleet and army worthy of his ego. The time had now come for Tylenicus to rid his chapter of all that would oppose him. By then Titus Morinus had been elected to Marshal of 3rd Company, despite Tylenicus’s scheming to either kill or disgrace him. Of the original 5 Great Companies, Tylenicus only trusted the commander of his old 5th Great Company Vendetta and his own; the rest would have to be swept away. This would be of little concern as Tylenicus had the 10 new black companies, 1st and 5th companies and all manner of pirate scum he had pressed into his command. His final hammer blow would land above the chapter recruitment world of Banderus 3, as the five original companies massed above the planet to purge an ork incursion the rest of Tylenicus’s dark army immerged from the warp in scavenged warships and surrounded there pray. Over the coms Tylenicus announced his dark crusade in the name of dark gods and told the marshals to expect no quarter. The three Marshals looked steadfast in the face of insurmountable odds and prepared to meet their end with honour. The Battle above Banderus was short but not lacking in intensity, the 4th company’s battlebarge rammed and destroyed three of the black company’s vessels in a last desperate attempt to take as many traitors with them as possible and give the 2rd and 3rd company a chance to escape. With only Morinus’s Battlebarge capable of making the jump to warp, he made full speed to the systems edge, the 2rd company’s battlebarge help off the traitor fleet long enough for Morinus and his men to enter the warp so he could report the high marshal’s heresy and return with the forces to end his former master.
Morinus had hoped for a chance to save his chapters honour, but the dark gods had other plans. His battlebarge had sustained massive damage in the battle and as soon as they enter the warp Geller field began to fluctuate. Plague bearers swarmed the bridge, quickly slaying the ships navigator. Morinus’s men bravely beat back the first attack, after nearly two hours of being assailed by nurgle warp spawn the Geller field was established; but at great cost, of the 450 battle brother that manned the ship less than a hundred survived and all but a hand full of the ship’s crew where untainted, the rest had to be purged. With no navigator the ship and her company where doomed to wonder the warp until they could guess a safe translation point. When they exited the warp, it had been a matter of weeks for them, but for them imperium many long years had passed.
After drifting in space for weeks the survivors where finally located by a Mechanicus explorer fleet. The fleet’s magos explained to Morinus what had happened to the rest of his chapter, they had been hunted down and scattered. Somewhere believed to have joined the red crosiers the others had fled into warp on board the space hulk Tyrants star and where still at large. The chapter had been branded excommunicate traitoris, and Morinus and the survivors would surely be killed with they had been discovered by the inquisition. As fortune would have it The Magos was in dire need of assistance; he contacted the adeptus adminisratum and proposed that the disgraced marines should act as the fleet guardians as their penance. The adminisratum accepted the proposal, but only because the Mechanicus had stressed the importance of the fleets expedition. The Magos gave the Marshal the proposition, the magos offered to help him repair ship broken ship in return for guarding his fleet. Mechanicus fleet had taken heavy losses in a battle with the eldar and would benefit greatly from a battle barge to bolster his calls; which was the reason he gave to Morinus but the magos had other more nefarious reasons for wanting an excommunicated company space marines at his bacon call.
Morinus gave a passionate speech to remnants of the 3rd and 2rd companies; he pleaded for them to stay on-board the battlebarge. He promised a chance at redemption, a chance to rebuild and regain the honour of their chapter. Then men called for Morinus to lead them as the new high Marshal but Morinus refused to sware the same oaths as the brothers that betrayed them. Together with the companies wardens they took the 5 virtues their chapter was founded upon and made new oaths for the chapter to sware upon.
1. Vendetta – With our last breath, we will avenge our brothers.
2. Venerable - We Honour the empire, which has forsaken us.
3. Vigilance – We are the eyes that guard our chapter.
4. Vigorous – against the traitor, our blades never tire.
5. Valorous – Only in death, do we earn our redemption.
With the help of the Magos, Morinus issued a degree to his men; All Baneful Sabres Astarte’s were to be fitted with ocular and auditory implants, with their Marshals and Wardens being able to see and hear what there men did no man could turn to chaos unnoticed. Little did they know, but their marshals wouldn’t be the only ones watching throw their eyes. The last loyal survivors of the chapter now travel with the Mechanicus explorers, helping them in their quest for arcane knowledge. In return the Marines get access to weapons and equipment and above all else a chance at redemption. One day Morinus hopes to have proved his loyalty to the imperium and separate from the Mechanicus fleet and hunt down Tylenicus and deliver his head to the high lords of terra themselves, hopefully buying his and his men’s freedom to fight as full chapter once more.
