30k Wolves Idea

I think its doable. I actually thought about using them for something when I made my last order for my wolves but decided against it due to the large number of eyes of horus and I find wolves wouldnt use chain axes (my 2 cents, seem a bit over messy). You can actually salvage bits off of numerous forge world sets for the wolves, ive used the rampagers, ches upgrade sets for the salamanders (pelts sculpted over scales) and ironwarrior/ironhands heads.

I do like the more dynamic poses they have, You are right about the spikes tho,  I would file away the SOH symbols etc  and  most of the spikes leaving just a few for that barbarian look.

I was planning  not to use all the chain axes just one or two with a sprinkling of  chainswords and other CCW I  do have a few Phalanx warder axes kicking around to put in as well which I thought would fit the look of the wolves better.

Cut the tips  off of the spikes and make them into studs.

It is what I did with my Justaerin which I converted up to Wolf Guard.

As for chain axes, you could always cut the heads off and replace with a more traditional axe head.

Could the chain axe pieces be used to make blades for Chainfists or something similar?

The eyes, will be a pain, unless you are running them as traitor Wolves, fighting for the Warmaster.

I personally do not see it working, but having not seen it in the flesh, or resin, I cant really comment on that front. But just for some things you might like to add, the Dark Angels and Blood Angels upgrade sets are pretty good all around. I mean you may have to shave off one or two markings but I can see it working for any other legionaries. The white scar stuff is pretty decent too.

Would they be traitor or loyaist Dark Angels? ;)

Removing or lowerig the profile of the spikes will subtly change the outline of the model.

Imagine as a PDF with your lasgun you see the silhouette of an Astartes moving towards you. You are not sure of the legion, but damn those spikes... Must be one of Horus' degenerates. 1st rank fore 2nd rank fire... Keep pouring it on.

In a similar scenario, you see the same, but the plate looks smooth and clean.... Must be one of us, wat till  he gets closer to confirm..

That would be my reasoning fluff-wise.

Also in real terms removing the spikes stops it looking like a traitor wannabe, a slight way to differentiate between legions.

From a vanity point of view, I would prefer people to ask if it is a conversion of a reaver, rather than go... Its just a reaver painted grey.. :D

Personally I think spikes are absolutely fine to represent loyal legionnaires. Lots of artwork has loyal legions having spiked pieces of armour and Remus Ventanus has a spiked shoulder pad in his official Forgeworld art. I think it adds a brutal look to the warrior, which would suit the VIth.

Ok so Im going to go for it, some good suggestions from you guys so far. I will look into some different heads etc from other upgrade kits.

I will post up pictures when I have one completed  to see what you guys think of the finished article

1. Yes to pictures.

2. Different heads are a must! The SoH-heads are so very distinct, you need to break up the familiar look somehow. Funnily enough, the Dark Angels heads actually strike me as very usable, as well as the Iron Warriors and possibly even some of the Deathguard heads, for that brutal aesthetic

I must say mate, your wolves are awesome.

Thanks :)

I draw inspiration from a number of places, like dimdim, grieux bladewolf, betrayer WLK and co

That's one of the great things about being a member on here, there is so much to take inspiration from.

The one with the DA Helmet and Chainsword is great, a lot of movement in it!

Thanks buddy, I'd say he is my favourite for that same reason. I tried to make them all as unique as possible as members of the rout.
