Legatus Thread - Civilized Discussion

We should all take a moment to realize that Legatus' thread was originally posted in a 40k sub-forum so he could link to it in future discussion instead of taking a thread off topic. Instead of dog piling the guy because he doesn't like the new lore, can we not appreciate that he wanted a resource so he could explain himself without going off topic?

Maybe we should take a moment to have a civil meeting to remind ourselves this is a forum and not an echo chamber, Dos? It's seems like we've forgotten that.

Everyone dog piling the guy like he was making trouble, when the trouble found him after something he had no control of isn't right.

Then you might want to edit your first post accordingly. You asked why the thread was shut down which concerns the Mods/Admins, not the Frater. If you'd like to discuss why he got dog-piled by the other Frater then perhaps you could state it clearly. That way, there's no unfortunate mix-up's and/or misunderstandings. smile.png

Also, I think Flint was referring to Legatus' snarky attitude, not yours.

Will do

I'm not being snarky, I promise :) He made the thread so he could link to something instead of derailing future threads. That seems like a solid idea, and amicable solution for the future.

Oh no, not yours at all, which is why I quoted the issue when I shut the thread.

I would have preferred a PM to a thread if you had a question, but I understand why you went the discussion thread method.

I think the issue is that most threads that have anything to do with Ultramarines go from opinion to frothing fanaticism very quickly. Select folks don't want to hear that perhaps their favorite Legion may not have been the best at X, Y, or Z and it turns into an ishpost real fast.

It seems like an inevitability.

People are passionate about the game.

People are passionate about their armies.

Discussions that incite a "who IS better" comparison fluff-wise will always hurt feelings, it's inevitable. Plus the lore is huge and convoluted - so much so that both everything and nothing is cannon.

Probably best to leave them out in my opinion.

It doesn't have to be an inevitability. The problem lies in the recent inability to discuss things people don't agree with passionately, without becoming hostile. You can love the Ultramarines, think they are the best, and say so loudly and often but that should never be an excuse for ad hominem attacks (not you specifically DR, :) )

Anyone who can't let others enjoy their view of the fluff is just as toxic to the hobby as the player who plays a WAAC army.

The fact that WAAC players are so widely discussed with contempt and yet people who try to shove their view of the fluff down other people's throats are not is baffling.

+ Edit : Rectified politically incorrect wording...

I don't think the Ultras are best at all things... just most things :-P

Any time you need to compare someone to a Nazi, your point of view has become invalidated. Bravo.

Seriously, that's just dumb. Don't do it.

Anyone who can't let others enjoy their view of the fluff is just as toxic to the hobby as the player who plays a WAAC army.

The fact that WAAC players are so widely discussed with contempt and yet fluff-nazies (for want of a better term) people who try to shove their view of the fluff down other people's throats are not is baffling.

Would the above be better? I'll edit my post if it makes you happier... As I said, "for want of a better term".

I still stand by my point, though. While playing to absolutely win is seen as unsporting, not being open to discussion regarding the fluff is not seen as badly. But this still remains a game, and everyone is entitled to enjoy it in whichever way they want.

I guess what I'm saying is there's no excusing someone who is too inflexible with their view of the fluff. The background is open to interpretation and riddled with holes and inconsistencies just so people can create whatever armies and stories they want. Whenever someone becomes too rigid on what is and isn't true to the lore, they stifle other people's creativity and cause just as much harm to the hobby as bad sports do. That kind of behaviour should never be tolerated, much less excused.

+ Edit : Note that I didn't follow the previous thread, so I have absolutely no clue if what I said is of any relevance here. I don't want to sound accusatory, I wasn't referring to anyone specific here...

I seriously have no clue what you guys are talking about? What's the matter here :)?

I'm actually not 100% sure. I'm guessing it's to do with the displeasures regarding the changes in the lore of the Ultras that was brought about in Tempest. There was a topic that discussed this.

There was a thread that got moved to the AoD that had originally been posted as an explanation of older 40k lore, and when moved to the AoD several people began personally attacking Legatus (who also being from Germany was more than likely sound asleep at the time) and the thread got closed. The point of this thread is that people may not like a point of view or even might dislike a particular poster, but there is no reason to dog pile somebody just because of it.

I remember the topic, and skimmed over it. I had no idea Legatus has suffered personal abuse. Some of the members of the BaC community should be ashamed.

End of the day, we pay for this hobby with out money, our time and out dedication. It's natural that we get invested.
