How to distinguish dark, dark green from Dark Angels?

Hello!

I'm saving up for an Iron Hands Betrayal at Calth taskforce from Forge World, but my plan is to create a kind of proto-Sons of Medusa variant colour scheme. The Moirae Schism is far too far in the future for there to really be a firm connection, but my painting skills and techniques are limited, so I'm not very confident of my ability to produce a version of the traditional 30K dark metal/black Legio X scheme. Therefore, my thought is to go for a very dark green with a lot of black and dark metal elements - but obviously that brings up the potential problem of resembling the Dark Angels too much.

To give you an idea, my Sons of Medusa are a darker shade than the Badab War books use as standard:

(Insert apology for both my photography and my painting here - these were my first models after getting back into the hobby.)

This scheme is a simplified version of the Aurora chapter scheme given in How to Paint Citadel Miniatures (though I came up with it myself) - essentially just primed black, based in Waaagh! Flesh, two very thin layers of Warpstone Glow, then washed with Biel-Tan Green. I wanted a deeper shade of green than the Badab War books, but more vibrant than the Dark Angels.

But now, thinking about a Great Crusade/Horus Heresy force, I'm trying to figure out how to take the essential idea of primarily green armour and make it darker so that it looks like a reasonable evolutionary step from the metal-and-black of the Legion as a whole. What I don't know is the best way to achieve that effect given my limited skills.

Elsewhere, I've seen a simple Iron Hands scheme which involves several washes of Nuln Oil over a Leadbelcher base, and I'm wondering if perhaps Waaagh! Flesh > Warpstone Glow > Nuln Oil would give me a good result - or should I start with something darker like Caliban Green?

My main concern is obviously not to look too much like a Dark Angels force from a distance. It won't be confusing up close because of the molded details, but I'd rather not step on their visual toes. What I really want is for it to be a green that has some vibrancy and doesn't skew too brown or blue, but is muted to the point that it's really getting close to black.

My general plan is basically to restrict the actual green elements to the plates of the armour, using black for the "soft armour" in the joints and recesses, dark metal for all the armour trim, but slightly brighter metal for any bionics on the helmets and the Legion symbols on the chest and shoulderpads. Maybe distinguish the augmetics in bronze colours, since I already have a healthy number of those paints on hand.

I'm not sure whether or not I want to keep the shoulderpads black - I would probably keep the Legion symbol shoulderpad black, but perhaps let the other side be green and come up with a chapter/detachment symbol that I can either freehand easily (unlikely!) or get my wife to design a transfer for that I can print on transfer paper. Or just go with plainer squad numbering or something.

My recommendations...

A:  Paint them Metallic Black as standard, but give them green high lights and use the Sons of Medusa symbol as their Clan badge

B: Paint them metallic Black as standard, but make the Clan shoulder pad green with the Clan badge as the second color (Orange if I remember correctly).

Being one of the Unforgiven, the best thing is to add in more metal areas or shade the white areas with gray. Stay away from reds and browns/bone.

Adding onto my fellow honoured son of Caliban's post; I think more metal areas are a great idea. Go for more of an oxidized brass/copper look.

In fact, here's a suggestion: Why not go for a heavily worn verdigrised look with oxidized metallic plates(Like an army of teeny Statues of Liberty)?

Take a leadbelcher(or Rub n' Buff, your choice) base, then wash heavily several times with a turqoise ink, probably mixing it with some Nuln oil to get it darker (P3's offering here: https://privateerpress.com/content/turquoise-ink might be a decent option)

Hopefully, it'll look like your army is a bunch of bad dudes who've been fighting so long their armor oxidized on them, somewhere between green Alpha Legion and Post-Heresy Dark Angels in shade. (plus it has the added benefit of probably most likely not being all that hard to do!)

Is this army for 30k? If so, it might not be as big of a problem as you think, because Heresy era DA are black. They repaint themselves at the end of the Heresy ;)

As for the scheme, I really enjoy the combination of black, metal/silver and green washed with Nuln Oil (and some Lahmian Medium to avoid irregularities), so that might be up your alley.

The Dark Angels on Caliban are noted to have changed the color of their armor, among several things.

Even in the projected light of the hololith, it was clear that most of the Space Marines were clad in the black livery of the original Terran Chapters, but some sported plates of dark green showing that they had been raised on Caliban.

I think the coloured metallic schemes look really good - verdigris is awesome, I like the "oil slick" Forge World look with patches of yellow, green, and purple, et cetera - but 1) as I said, my skills are pretty limited, and 2) I definitely want dark green as the primary colour for the armour.

That said, I will test out some options on spare plastic I have kicking around - no spare figures per se, but I have a bunch of sprue frames left over from the Assault on Black Reach box those Space Marines above come from, so I can test out a couple of different layer and wash combinations at least to see how they work on the flat.

Caliban Green with a nulin oil wash. Then a highlight of whaaagh flesh. Wrap it up with a highlight on the corners and edges with loren forest. You can try a wash of athonian camoshade to blend it together possibly. I haven't tried it myself yet.

The highlight colors are what brighten the green armor up. So if you use darker green hightlights it won't brighten up as much.

You could always prime with a black then work the colour to an almost blackish green. I mean, I would keep them black, silver, red and white if I was to do Terran units and Terran influence. However there is a scheme that would work perfect for Caliban Dark Angels, as in, those sent back with Luther or those who joined with the Lion.

Something like this (google image search so I do not have the exact source of the creator, will add when I get home)
