Disappointed with the Mastadon.

See people get mad when you have 6+ termis and a character  in a Spartan they cry all the eggs in one basket

This thing is 700 points   , eats a LoW slot  and while it has an impressive ability to carry a lot of the army it still requires force saturation  to wherever it is just by means of being a transport.

Not to mention its a gigantic block of resin so its gonna cost an arm and a leg

I think it is disappointing , at least from my own list building perspective

It looks absolutely sick and Id love to paint one but I can never see myself fielding it just due to the fact that  for that point value I can take almost two knights

From an Imperial Fists perspective if yer gonna go that ham on a transport wouldnt you  rather the Thunderhawk ?

I mean, if my opponent wants to come to the table with a single massive unit that costs as much as three vanquishers and a tank ace before you put stuff in it... my Solar Aux aren't going to complain.

I for one, am absolutely not disappointed with the Mastadon.

Disregarding my mistake with the detachments: this is basically my point. It's on the same level as a Warhound so why should it be held to different standards? I don't see complaints that one can't take a primarch and a warhound in smaller games so why should this be different?

But flint isint that a reason why a legion player should be disappointed in it?

Couldn't tell you.

I'm just saying I'm certainly not disappointed in it. The heresy is more than just legion lists, man  :D

I dunno, isn't that kind of saying that any high point model is disappointing?

So for those arguing background reasons. How many times do we see a Primarch sharing a ride with anyone other than his personal bodyguards? If you find the answer to that question, then you will know why there is no fluff justification for a mass transport to be used on a Primarch and his body guards.

I have to say, I will eventually have one, because it's the epytome of an Iron Hands Head of the Gorgon RoW I shall outflank it and call it Steve. Yes...Yes... most devious!

*gasp* :O! You devious villain!

If it really came down to it, I'd go for a Stormbird or Aetos Dios...

...Probably a Stormbird if I had the choice.

We can do a rediculously ineffective super heavy building competition and film it for the Frather.

Over here we have Wolf_Pack who dropped superglue on his fingers for the 3rd time this morning, cursing the weakness of the flesh and ripping them appart from their devilish bond. Never a hobbyist as shed so much of his own blood in 15 minutes.

Units like the Mastodon always get a bad rap. First everyone figures out how to kill them, writes them off, and then in a few months/a year someone will come up with a decent use for them. I've been crawling through tactica and rules threads, and its a consistent trend.

examples?

The fact that you can't field a Mastodon and a Primarch at anything below 4500 points is where my disappointment lies.

The Onslaught detachment doesn't solve anything, like I said. If the tank could at least be taken as a,dedicated Transport to a Primarch it would work. Heck, limit it to a 3000 point game.

I'm not interested in Apocalypse sized battles, they're too time consuming and cumbersome.

So what I'm getting is that unless someone says "Hey, I found this secret rule everyone missed. You can take a Mastadon as a dedicated transport for a Primarch" you aren't going to be content.

Please explain. B/c it allows you to do literally the exact thing you said you wanted to. Primarch + add'l LoW slot for Mastadon.

**EDIT**

Yep, went back through the thread just to make sure. You never mentioned the Onslaught detachment, just the Leviathan.

And that giant games lose the "art of list building or theme."

And even if yah do put a primarch in it   its a next 700 points added on for something thats not terribly killy , say you stick a primarch and some termis in there and then you have a colossal  point sink  and it aint even like its a Hyper Murderous Pointsink  like The Tormentor ( pertarino )  or the  Aetos Dios ( Dornadiddly )  which are scary vehicles in their own right its just .. ... meh I just cant really see it being a useful investment of money or points  other than saying

yo look at this expensive resin brick I have! Looks fly as hell dont it homie?

Indeed  you  gonna field it ?

Nah son , you know how many points that thing costs ?

Meanwhile you got hesh over here with his evil villian mustache  cackling like a mad man going  ALL THE GRAV WEAPONS MWUHAHAHAH
