ETL V- Motivation and Preparation AoD unite!

I too failed my vow last year. Pledged Space Wolves and got disheartened when I couldn't get the grey to work.

This year I am out of school and building an Iron Warrior force. With the whole summer off I should have no issues with getting the vows done. I'll be keeping it to manageable vows rather than 6000+ points at once.

It'll be fun regardless and I look forward to seeing the work in the forum boards (stealing ideas).

  • 2 weeks later...

So will we just be posting up here? This is my first time doing this

From what I know their will be a "Strategium" thread in each subforum that Captain Semper will post come the 15th where everyone can post their vows/pictures.

This thread is just to drum up support for our faction for the contest biggrin.png

Please make vows that are manageable and that you know you'll finish!

For example if you're planing to paint up a Betrayal at Calth set for the ETL, don't vow the whole set as your first vow. Break it up into the five vows that you're allowed (ie vow 1: 5 Terminators, vow 2: 15 Tactical Marines, vow 3: 1 Contemptor + 1 HQ, vow 4: 15 Tactical Marines, vow 5: 1 HQ). It's also risky vowing minis that you don't actually have yet (depending on where you live FW deliveries can take some time, plus there might be a problem with the mini when it arrives or you might simply lose motivation while you wait for your order to arrive). If you're worried that your oder won't arrive before the entry cut off date, just vow something small and easy to paint such as a single HQ mini and get it finished while you wait for your main vow to arrive. Another important point is to paint minis that you're motivated to paint and that you're sure that you'll be able to finish on time. Choose something that you actually want to paint, not something that will earn your forum the most points. Big vows might seem more glorious and heroic, but if you fail to get them finished... well, you fail...

Last year we were in a very good position as a forum, and we managed to get a lot done but our large number of failed vows meant that it was all for nothing. We should be able to give it a real crack this year :tu:

Ps. I've just primed the start of my first vow! I'm starting to get excited now biggrin.png

I think I'll have my dreadnought vow as my first. Low models (6 Dreadnoughts - 2 contemptors, 2 deredeos and 2 leviathans) with a reasonable number of points (1415pts) and I like walkers in general.

They're not small models, but should be manageable; especially considering my wedding is 6 days after EtL starts and my honeymoon is the last week of may/first week of june (so not going to be able to get into the flow of painting too much until mid June).

Really looking forward to making some sort of start though.

I've been holding off painting new stuff, which has been tough as my Sicaran is just sooo tempting!! Thank goodness Oz is ahead of the time.....

I have managed to use the time wisely to assemble and prime some B@C termies (that I really had no inclination to paint previously). stripped down some other mini's that will require a re-do with my revised scheme and cast up some scenic bases. I've also ordered some warplane transfers for my Xiphon Interceptor.

I am pretty good at painting armour, as I really enjoy the weathering aspects, it is more a struggle to do big units! Perhaps a Skyhunter force is the way to go!!

Well, the opening is not such an exact science. I'll set up all the Strategiums and the Main Rules and lock them on the 14th and then, once everything is set, I'll unlock them. Once your Strategiums gets unlocked you can make your vow. This can be at any point either late in the 14th or early in the 15th my time zone.

Now deadlines is a different story, those are tightly observed. ;)

Please make vows that are manageable and that you know you'll finish!

THIS, THIS, ALL OF THE THIS.

One of the reasons we didn't get over the line first last year is because people over committed in their first vows, either by pledging too much or by pledging stuff they didn't have and thought they'd be able to get and then didn't. There were quite a few who went straight to a 3,000 point vow and then nothing, or very little, ever actually materialised.

Now, we've got a bunch of really fast painters in the AoD, as well as people like Kurama who have literally been looking forward to and planning for the ETL since it finished last year, but it's really important to not get caught up in the hype and over-commit if you're not going to be able to deliver. There's stepping up to the plate and going the extra mile, but we all have our limits.

Last year I moved between London and Edinburgh during the ETL, and I had all of my hobby stuff packed up in boxes and in storage for about a month. Also, because of the move I wasn't able to spend a heap of cash on new stuff leading into it, so that also limited how much I had and how much it was realistic for me to vow. In the end, I only pledged about 1,200 points worth of stuff, but I got it done and that contributed to our total, rather than took away from it by being incomplete.

We've got to be realistic in what we think we can achieve. This year I'm only moving house, so while I still haven't been able to spend a heap (yay for mortgages!), I've still got more time and scope to do more things, and will be hoping to at least double the points I did last year.

Everyone's got stuff. Exams, work, real life, hobby fatigue, whatever. If you put down a vow, be sure that you're going to be able to finish it. If you're not sure, then you've got until June 15th to figure it out.

There are little extra things that it can add a fair bit to our points total as a sub-forum too. The March of the Legions threads are a great way of getting an extra character painted. This month is Space Wolves/VI Legion. If you've got any spare bits lying around that you're not going to use, make up a Space Wolf centurion and add it to your pledge. I've got a little Space Wolf Chaplain ready to be undercoated and added to my first vow. I've got a White Scar, Iron Warrior and Emperor's Child too, to fulfill the remaining months in the ETL, should March of the Legions still be running through it.

All that said, I'm really looking forward to this year. I think it's going to far surpass last year's in terms of quality and output, and I can't wait to see what you guys get done.

Cool, so basically look for the Strategium appearing, which will be the 14th. Then after a period of time it will be unlocked and vows can be made?

Excellent, thank you for the heads up Captain :tu:

The Inner Circle: We aim to please!

Both Kurama and StruManChu speak wisely - choose what you wish to pledge wisely, brothers. Enjoy yourselves and don't push yourself to the point where you burn out. I came close to burning out last year but I prevailed. This year I will make the sensible choice of switching from lots of infantry to a super heavy vehicle. Much less demanding but still a relatively points dense model. ^_^

Now on that note I'll leave thus here;

now I've got a massive headache really swollen ears and still im currently building 2 more knights for etl, come on boys get it together!

well i let Kurama down on the "Tale of (insert number here) Hobbyists" sleep.png so I'm in for the AOD with a Calth box really asking for imperial fists yellow on Em!!

This whole box will be painted for the ETL and dedicated to the encouraging Zeal of Kurama... May i fail you Not !!!.

while were here...unsure.png should i make 3x of my Imperial fists tactical guys from the calth box with the Hvy Bolters for future use in the 30k game play? im wanting to play 30k more so than the calth game itself... any input greatly appreciated happy.png

i say that in the understanding that IF's have that bolter rule...where if i coupled that with sniper...that squad could move and shoot and wound AP2 on 6's devil.gif
