About us crushing the thin bloods, seeing them driven before us and hearing the lamentation of their women!

Ten points to Conandor!!
I see what you tried to do, but no. It just doesn't flow. DENIED!

There's a little something I've been wondering about the Ex Tenebra Lux since I've first witnessed it. Namely, what's the point of it.

From my understanding, said point is to finish models you've had on the back burner so that you may finally have the completed force you've always dreamed to own.

But from the participants' behavior last year, and even now, the point rather seems to be to win, with several people seemingly buying and painting models to help their factions become the victor, not because they've always wanted to have a certain army.

So I'm wondering if I got the right idea or was wrong from the beginning.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone buy stuff specifically for the ETL. Rather, the logic seems to be 'Had an idea for a cool thing. Huh, ETL is on its way, I'll do it for that!'.

I mean, I want to win again this year sure, because three in a row is a hell of a feat. But even if we come dead last, we still win because people got models painted, the community gets enriched and a damn good time is had by all. What's not to like?

In short, the point is painting, but aiming for the top spot is a happy bonus, especially when it works. Hell, I only paint for the ETL and the Call, otherwise I get bored.

Like all human endeavor, the ETL started with noble purpose and then spiraled into a black hole of competition and fighting. Embrace the inner darkness.

There's also the whole 'bonding as a community' thing going on as well. I'd say there's a great deal of social contact going on that wouldn't be occurring otherwise. happy.png

I'm a loner who doesn't seek to bond with community or even believe in friendship, that's probably why I mistook the enthusiasm for missing the point. laugh.png

Thanks for the answers!

That's how people buying more than one special character for the ETL comes off to me, but I'm probably wrong.

Indeed this. Its why Sports has becoming a monolithic financial empire for those who own the leagues/teams.

There's nothing wrong with the ETL yes people do like to do cheese and play unfairly, but it's also a way for those not usually motivated year round to find an excuse to add to their collection etc.

You don't need to be competitive, the reason I've done this thread for a Second year In a row isn't for a win win win scenario, it's because alot of our hobbyists have procrastination or hobby butterfly syndrome, I've fou d that motivation and showing mateship helps get those beautiful unpainted miniatures done for the said individuals.

Winning doesn't matter but it adds that extra kick for those that otherwise wouldn't be participating.

It's a group effort not an individual competition. You could paint the best army in 3 months with the most points but you won't win if you haven't got the support from your fellow frater, no one person wins etl it's the team. This then allows us to help those that we wouldn't normally offer support whether it's because they paint a force we don't have Interest in or we've never seen they're hobby plog, you come together as a group and you work as a group.

To me it's the Anzac spirit (that australia and new Zealand seemed to have lost) of teamwork, mateship, courage, endurance and good humor. Now if that's not worth partaking in and supporting I don't know what is.

We're Americans. If you're not first. You're last. Slips can be an honorary American, too.

"Ricky Bobby, I was drunk when I said that...you could be second, third, hell you could even be fourth!"

"Dang it dad! I lived my whole life around that!!!"

Also, I think we will have all the Battle at Calth bandwagoners this year :)
