Sgt. Blank
I was wondering if anyone has much experience with textured spray paint. I have a 4 ft by 6 ft gaming table I made a couple years ago that I never got around to putting any sort of texture on. I had planned to use sand, glue and paint for this but I was at the hardware store last week and noticed that Rustoleum makes textured spray paint. It's meant to be weather resistant, so I am imaging that it would be durable enough for dice and models to wander about without an issue. Has anyone tried this product or something similar for hobby applications? It seems like a good shortcut and might even be lighter weight than sand as well. Sgt. Blank
Cool - the weather where I live is rotten for spraying right now, but if I get to it first, I will let you know how it comes out. Teetengee
Yeah, weather right now isn't great here either, a bit too cold for my liking. Canadian_F_H
Idk. It be OK, seams like the less than ideal choice however. If you're looking in hardwhare stores there are lots of options for adding texture that are applied by hand that are more manipulable and can be painted over in any color. NovemberIX
It's not bad actually, before I had the tiles I sprayed some MDF boards with the "Stone" spray. It does come off as rather fine, and some of it will fleck off when touched, but most of it will stay. And the nice thing is since it's for a tabletop, as long as your can is somewhat warm, the weather doesn't really matter much. Sgt. Blank
I am open to suggestions. I am looking for something that's affordable, durable and relatively lightweight when completed. It might help to show the table I am working on. I don't have the space or inclination to keep a table set up all the time (maybe some day...), so I got a cheap folding table from Costco and 2 4ft x 3 ft pieces of plywood and some 2 x4s. The 2x4s sit like a frame around the folding table, effectively making it much bigger and giving me a table that can fit in the back of a closet. http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Terrain/CIMG2083.jpg Here's the frame before the plywood was added: http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Terrain/CIMG2079.jpg I'm worried about using sand, for example, since I am worried it will rub off unless I seal it very aggressively. I figured the rustoleum might serve the job with less work. NovemberIX
Got a couple of shots that might help http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag67/NovemberIX/IMG_2999_zps0ff36maw.jpg This is my old table, used 1/2 inch MDF, primed with automotive gray, sprayed stone texture paint on it. no sealer. http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag67/NovemberIX/DSC05062_zpscyy2z3kd.jpg A bit more upclose to see the texture itself. As I said, it comes out fine grain, but it is noticeable, and can be sprayed heavier to get more texture. Hope this helps! DistroyA
I used textured spray paint on my table, and it worked just fine. It kept it's texture when it came to painting it, and is very durable, so it's worth getting. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320582-textured-spray-paint-for-gaming-table/#findComment-4342193 Share on other sites
Teetengee
What brands have you all used? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320582-textured-spray-paint-for-gaming-table/#findComment-4342435 Share on other sites
Sgt. Blank
Update: I pulled the trigger on this project and painted the table. I tested the spray on some scrap wood. http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Terrain/DSCN2130_zps6xlld9up.jpg On the left is the textured spray applied straight to the bare wood. On the right is the spray over primer. I used too much for both tests but the main take-away was that even with a heavy coating, the textured spray was a bit translucent - I'd recommend priming or undercoating. I went ahead used it on the table too, with some primer: http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Terrain/DSCN2131_zpspoiuzydj.jpg http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Terrain/DSCN2132_zpsdjdgcrir.jpg I am happy enough with the result - it ended up a nice natural looking blend of colors and it has some fine texture. It's not as textured as sand, but it feels tough and I expect it will not flake off when I set up or store the table, so that's a huge plus. As you can see from the photos, it didn't completely cover the wood grain or the manufacture's mark on the wood. Maybe a second coat of primer would have helped but the wood is cheap plywood and it would have taken a lot of work to close up the grain. I may still give it one more coat of textured paint to see if it improves the result. Cost: $14 for 3 cans of paint (1 primer/paint and 2 textured paint) at chain home improvement store - the result above used all of this paint to cover a 4 x 6 piece of plywood Time: 15 minutes spraying with a 30 minute wait for the primer/paint to dry Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320582-textured-spray-paint-for-gaming-table/#findComment-4353449 Share on other sites
DistroyA
@Teetengee: I think the brand I used was Rustoleum. Cost me around £7 per can, and, because with Wilko you have to check the cans to see if all the paint is in the can, I ended up using 3 cans of the stuff. It's definitely worth the investment. Just make sure to check that the can is full before you fork your cash over. I reckon 2 full cans would texture a 6ft x 4ft table easily. Sgt. Blank
I used Rustoleum. 2 cans of the textured were enough to cover the 4x6 (with a layer of primer underneath). The texture is finer what you'd get with sand and glue, if that matters to you.
