Acebaur
So I want to paint some re-entry burns on my drop pods to break up the mono color scheme and conventional wisdom is that you use black and dark grey's to achieve this. But what to do when your drop pod's color is black already? Since I play Black Templars my pods are naturally black as are the rest of my vehicles. So how to achieve re-entry marks? Anyone have any experience with this? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320655-re-entry-burns/ Share on other sites
NovemberIX
From what I've seen of the shuttle thermal protection system tiles a gray and white patina seems to form, to really sell the heat ablation maybe expose metallic on the edges. Kastor Krieg
Using this pattern: A grayish or tan patina, even a rusty one, should be fine, Brother Acebaur. http://www.ohnitsch.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/110310_7888.jpg http://www.collectspace.com//review/iss16_landing07.jpg http://aerospace.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/tank-scan-2-444x332.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320655-re-entry-burns/#findComment-4342547 Share on other sites
Kastor Krieg
Also, painting black and with highlights and then using spray or airbrush to "nadir underlight" (as opposed to zenithal highlighting) should also work fine. You might consider using a very matte black / dark grey color, as well - like VGC 72.155 Extra Opaque Heavy Charcoal. Bryan Blaire
Agree with November and Kastor, a greyish to tan effect would work great. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320655-re-entry-burns/#findComment-4343829 Share on other sites
Ovidius Incertus
For a black pod, I'd do streaks from the bottom up of VMA German Gray or Dark Sea Gray and maybe go as light as VMA US Gray in some sots before giving burn accents with brownish/red colors like VMA Camo Black Brown and Hull Red. At the extreme areas of wear, I'd do accents of bare metal. Kastor Krieg
I'd also experiment with rubbing in lighter / rusty pigments. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320655-re-entry-burns/#findComment-4344195 Share on other sites
Warsmith Uveron
Try Weathering Powders. Whites, Greys and Browns even some other Black, but the tone will be different from the pigments of the paint. So should show up.
