The Black Death, The Black Legion

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys after meaning to start this thread for nearly a year now sine the last ETL I've finally gotten around to it. Now as you can probably guess from how long I've been intending to start this it is not the beginning of an army but the continuation of one. I've been working on this army for around 2-3 years now.

I must war you that I am quite slow when it comes to getting new minis painted however I do have a pretty large back catalogue to get through so hopefully I'll be able to put up new minis pretty regularly.

Anyway time to get on with talking about the actual models. As the title says this blog will mainly be focused around the Black legion however over time I am hoping to have each legion be represented with a small force, one of my favourite bits about the Black Legion is that you can have them fighting with basically any other Chaos Faction and be able to justify it fluff wise which is something I hope to take full advantage of.

My force is the Grand Company of Kloros Juddthall also known as 'Abaddon's Own', a year before the commencement of the 13th Black Crusade, Juddthall and his company were deployed to disrupt the supply sources of the war machine that defended Cadia. Juddthall's fleet chose the agri world of Clauder as it's unlucky target. A world almost completely consisting of land it had one settlement that would be considered major by Imperial terms would be the great hive port which lay in the planets northern hemisphere which was used to export the billions of tonnes of food produced each year off planet.

Due to the planets spread out populace instead of using traditional tactics the legion set about by deploying on mass far from their intended target, the hive. Fire could be seen on the horizon and reports were coming from outlying transmission posts that many farms had gone silent. A planet that had never truly experienced violence, it was still extremely well guarded planet and the planetary governor decided that a display of force was in order to quell the growing concern in the port.

Approximately 80,000 defence force members marched out of the city in various forms, the people thronged the streets to see their boys march off to sort out the trouble in the outer regions. They'd show them what real bravery was. It would be the last time they'd see there men in a form they recognised.

Two days went by and reports were positive from the expeditionary leader Commander Leugral Von Hemel. It was on that second night that communications stopped all that came back was static. However one comms operator would swear until the day he died that he had heard for a split second the sound of screaming and laughter.

Six days later the first sight of the unknown foe was reported a grainy image taken by a farm hand who managed to transmit it before the signal was abruptly cut. War had come to Clauder!

Funnily enough for a Black Legion blog the first pictures wont be the main men themselves but some death guard from last year's ETL. This might seem a bit odd but out of all the models I've painted I think these are my favourites, had an absolute blast converting these up and hoping to make some more some time soon.

Squad Agnet served their legion honourably if without distinction. It was due to this lack of recognition that lead to the actions that would earn the squad its title 'The Grim Reapers' after the joy and enthusiasm with which they butchered the Terran Veterans during the Isstvan lll atrocity. The squad lost only one member during the events of the heresy, brother Enaol died on the word of Molech to an Imperial Army flamer squad. In the 600 experienced year since the heresy the have only lost a further two members; Brother Gaiment died on the frigate Barbaros' Mist from an explosion caused by lances from an imperial fleet 258 years after the heresy. Brother Voyten died against the Tau just 12 years before the assault on Clauder dying during a Kroot ambush it's said he died laughing as the first kroot who had began devouring his flesh began to come out in great pustules.

During the campaign on Clauder squad Agnet would be used extensively against the trench works of Derital and against its heavily contested eastern residential areas of the great port hive cities. Theirs use of chemical warfare turned the street into smog filled death grounds.

If you've made it through all that congratulations, but until next time.

Hey guys, well it's been a while school really stopped me taking part in the non-online side of the hobby. However as many others on the forum ETL got me back into painting so hopefully this is me now on a bit of a semi regular update cycle.

Weapons Master Taral Bel'ar

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/gfiorentini9/IMG_6723_zpslir5o991.jpg

Even before he was taken by the recruitment masters from the slums of Cthonia Bel'ar was no stranger  to violence, being used as a runner for a gang known as ''The Blinders''  who had a particular fondness for blinding their enemies before killing them, this viciousness and fast style of fighting was at odds with those employed by many of the other gangs of his home world. Be'lar carried this style of warfare with him into to the legion, naming it 'Nathair'.

Bel'ar was a strong believer that being inducted into the legion rose him above lesser creatures and saw it as an opportunity to elevate his skills at killing to even greatr heights, it was for this reason that he joined the recruitment corps in the legion, raising more gang members from the gutter to allow them to reach the lofty levels of killing he himself had. He instilled these beliefs in those who trained under him, this left him with a network of loyal brothers throughout the legion with some of their admiration bording on worship of the man who had allowed them to ascend above the petty ambitions of a Cthonian gang member.

It was on Bel'ar's recommendation that many of his former recruits joined the Lodges that were spreading throughout the legion, and those who did not share his beliefs he was only too happy to remind that he was the Master and they the recruit. Bel'ar did not take to the field during the Istvaan atrocities knowing that no matter how skilled the sword man it would matter not if a tank round went off beside you. Instead he dedicated his time to replacing those lost in the battles against the loyalist forces.

Bel'ar nearly lost his life in the trenches of Terra a champion of the Blood Angels ramming a combat blade into his eye, while he lay in the mud bleeding out his loyal recruits swarmed the Angel dragging it down. Destroying it. Even 10,000 years later Bel'ar still carries the Angels finger bones on a pouch at his side.

The battle on Clauder suited Bel'ar perfectly ,the fighting in the city allowing him to reach the enemy without being taken out from distance.

Thanks for looking guys, more updates soon :thanks:

Thanks Venomlust sorry about the late rely laptops been down for a few days. It's always been one of my favourite tings about GW is how interchangeable their entire range is allows for so many opportunities for customisation in your armies.

So after a few hectic weeks and quite a long break from actual hobbying I've finally gotten myself back into doing something hobby related. I recently picked up a SM assault squad box set and yesterday set about chaosifying them, so far I've finished 2 models minus some greenstuffing and adding some trophies from the new GW skull set. The idea is that these are the reaver squad that use the SW assault craft from earlier in this blog from lexicanum there's not much fluff really circulating about these squads but hopefully I'll try and add some of the trinkets and runes that the SoH used to adorn their armour with.

The one downside of using the assault squad is that the squad come out very vanilla looking, with hopefully the paintjob and the trophies bringing them back in line with the rest of the force.

I've been working on a bot of a mixed lot of stuff this week comprising of models from three legions, the first of these was the remainder of the Reavers assault squad from my last post, again these guys have been made mainly from the assault squad box to help give them that sense of motion that's vital for a squad with their background. Assembly wise these guys are essentially done apart form some more mould line removal and drilling out the barrels of the guns

they might have to wait for paint though as I've had an airbrush mishap meaning at some point I'll have to pick up a new one at some point, however, with all the DG coming out over the next month I'll still be left with plenty of stuff to paint.

Speaking of the DG I've basically finished painting up the lord of contagion as well as staring on two of the PM. The lord of contagion may still get a few licks of painting when doing the PM if I can think of anything.

And finally some works been done to the EC dreadnaught from a few weeks back, the right arms been finished as wells as the abdomen, mostly by adding greenstuff tubes. The left arm is proving to be a bit more difficult currently thinking of adding some claws to match those of the deamonettes slightly but I'm still looking around for bitz. I'm also thinking of changing up the scheme I used on my earlier EC terminators even on the significantly smaller termis it cam across a bit garish and not in a good EC way.

I'm planning on picking up some liquid greenstuff in my DG order next week and using it to smooth the transition between the tubes and the marines head.

After months of not being able to pick up a paintbrush for months I finally managed to sit down on Monday and get some hobby time, I started painting up some Black Legion terminators I assembled back last summer. Since taking these pics I've noticed a few things that need to be edited so I'll hopefully get these finished over the next few days and then get the final pictures uploaded  and some fluff for them.

I'm still not 100% on the black, normally I quite like it but on the quite plain armour of these guys it just looks a bit flat. Once I finish adding the final few details I'll see how it still looks.

I think that you're correct, the black is a little flat. But once you've taken the gold up a notch and finished other details as you say then possibly the black will come into its own? Or it may just need a fine edge highlight of Eshin Grey?

BCC

I think an edge highlight and maybe picking out some of the servos in a silver will help. If it's still no fully popping I was wondering if maybe picking out the additional armour plate on the thighs in an almost burnished gold might help?

Sorry for the delay in replying been very hectic round here recently.

@hushrong Its a really simple scheme! I prime with Halford's matte black, the air brush on Vallejo Model Air Barley Grey followed by US grey

I've been doing a bit more work on the terminators but I've realised that I've run out of glue so I can't add finish the models off with some trophies which will probably delay me getting the final pictures of them up.

I do have something to show you guys though. I got an attack bike kit at Christmas and decided to have a go at making my own version of Kraut Scientist's amazing war trike from a few years ago. I still have to do some greenstuffing and and pick a head for the passenger, but you should be able to get a general idea of it.

Thanks for looking and as always C&C welcome.

  • 2 months later...

So with exams finally finished I've got time to get back to painting and finally managed to get some finishing touches to the terminator squad as well as finishing off my first vow from the ETL.

Terminator Squad Tiberian formally of the 26th Company; Sons of Horus

Tiberian looked around at the burning mortals camp, during the night they'd come for them, blown in like the wind before cutting through them, right to their heart. Men and women in pale blue flak armour  streamed past him some even running into him in their blind fear. Unlike many within the legions he took little pleasure in butchering sheep, though he had rebelled against the emperor credit had to be given for what he had created. His squad on the other hand had no such reservations.

Faultan was currently dragging ammo crates aside to get to a pocket of resistance being organised by a captain, who seemed to be the only person in this place with any military knowledge. It did him little good in the end Faultans claws shredded through his ranks of men. The chitin covered skull on his back juddered up and down as if some inner predator was still alive in there.

The squad's heavy weapons specialist Zorgdon was spitting control bursts of rounds into the sea of humanity surrounding him each burst sent the jaw trophy on his back rattling, how he hadn't lost it after all these years still shocked him. With each spray of blood Zorgdon's eye lenses glowed with a malicious evil, the likes of which he had never quite seen in any other legionary, it often crossed his mind just what  Zorgdon had given to the dark gods.

Finally his attention was drawn to To'rk and Hemlak, both moving through the knots of defence force butchering in their own ways. Hemlak's two power weapons lashed out independently of each other  meeting little resistance, Hemlak had always been the duellist of the squad, always seeking the greatest challenge and the most extravagant kill. To'rk on the other hand was a man who had been wasted in the green of the Son's the blood stained white of the Eaters would have suited him better, he barrelled through the defence forces his chain fist lacerating men with every brutish swing.

In the distance a booming klaxon rung out audible  even above the screams of the dying, the Ravens of House Morrigan were finally joining the fray....

So the overall idea with this squad was to try and create a unique squad but I also wanted to try and keep the squad mostly in the Tartaros, I quite like the idea that these are the one squad that isn't in a bastardised armour set, to preserve the high functions of the suits.

Next up there's the chosen squad seen further up the page as well as a vindicator and some other bits and bobs.

So managed to get my third ETL vow finished, both these came about as a fluff first idea and then really built up from there. It was quite a good idea for the ETL too as the Emperors Children Marine allowed me to paint something a bit different from the Black of the rest of the legion.

Commissar Leytron hid. What else was there to do? Those creatures had moved through them as if they weren’t there, arms slicing out reducing his command to nothing in seconds. He had run, and he had hidden, and they had left him alone.
The rocks and debris cut at him, bring sharp needles of pain flaring through him. Screams and weapons could be heard still in the distance along with a high-pitched whining. It was then that he saw it moving towards him. A man in a deep purple armour was approaching, the arm was formed of slopping surface and covered in white rosette swirls, it was then he saw it his face. Unlike the rest of his armour his helm was a brilliant gold and formed into the shape of the Emperor. Tears exploded from his eyes, a saviour! He clawed his way from the gravel and groped at his saviour’s legs, he had to be sure, to be sure he was real.
……………
He looked down at thing clawing at his feet, tears ran down his distorted grim covered face. He reached his hand down and stroked it against him. The sensors in his armour made it feel as if he wore no armour at all, a tingle flared up his arm causing convulsions throughout it. Without though his arm reached for the mask attached to his face.
……………
A scent reached Leytron’s nose, not un-pleasant but neither was it pleasant it reminded him of the thick fumes that had lined the streets of his home world on the day of St Bastilian. Looking behind the angel brought a strangled whimper from his lips, creeping up on them was a something that had a vague resemblance to a human, but one who had been turned into a mockery of what the term meant. He was pushing a brazier from which a cloud of perfumed pink smoke floated.
He looked up at his protector, pleading for help, but the only movement he was making was to reach to his helmet. The thing behind him and stopped pushing the brazier and was now warily approaching them.
He heard a wet tearing noise and looked up. Its mask was half off its face now, but it seemed to be bringing most of the face with it leaving the wet muscles underneath exposed to the air, it’s eyes, blood shot and rolled back into their sockets betrayed the edges of brilliantly blue pupils. Its lips were peeled backwards revealing the nubs of where its teeth had once been. It casually flung its golden mask into the heart of the pink smoke, the creature behind them jumped around excitedly.
He desperately tried to push himself away, but it put a hand on his shoulder pulling him in closer. Its words came out as if it’s tongue wasn’t in one piece.
‘’Where are you going my child? I’ve not introduced to your new brother yet.’’

‘’And they shall know no fear’’
He snorted too himself, they knew fear alright, they may not fear death or the horrors of the galaxy but ‘he’ saw beyond that, even in those he called brother. He looked down at the axe resting in his hand, this one had been scared, what was it he had called him?
‘A witch’ that was it. He had looked beyond that screaming visage deeper beyond his indoctrinations even into his inner most feelings and he had seen it. The fear of something he didn’t understand, something he couldn’t touch. He had killed him and while the life had fled his body, he had shown him the truth. The real secrets of the warp and the inevitable fall of his beloved Emperor and finally he had allowed him to see the fate of his weapon, how it would channel the warp the lives it would take in the name of the ancient Gods he worshipped. That had done it, the last of the creatures conscious had slipped away.
His thoughts went to the Blood Angel mounted to his bike. Now that had been more than fear, the rage, that never-ending battle against rage that he was constantly losing. Being slowly dragged towards a cliff trying to claw his way back. He had broken him, like Horus had broken his father and when he spoke to the sons of Sanguinius he used that angel’s voice, so they’d know he knew them and he knew how to undo them.
The explosions brought him rushing back to reality, beneath him the Imperials camp was in flames, his mind was already thrumming with their fear.

Glad you like the Emperor's Children hushrong, they're the legion I've always struggled with most paint scheme wise because what suits them in the fluff with the multitude of bright colours, doesn't always come across well on a painted figure.

Yeah, they are an odd bunch. I went for classic gold and purple too because I wanted to be able to go back in time a bit to HH with my army if I ever got a chance to. Yet even then, when the corruption set in they were a carnival of raving colors. Your gold and purple are perfect and that filigree really kicks it up a notch.
