Guiltysparc
I am looking into cases for my heresy army. My buddy has one of the new citadel cases and i like it quite a lot. A legion army would fit pretty well inside of one since its marines and such. My question is how well things like a spartan and dreadnought drop pods will fit in them. I am guessing a spartan would fit but probably take up most of a tray with the accordian style foam. I don't really have any idea how well a dreadpod would fit sitting on its side. Any ideas/suggestions? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320970-carrying-case-question/ Share on other sites
Slips
A Friend has them and he says they aren't suited for larger stuff. Its good for small/medium vehicles with very standard shapes but stuff like Pods, Spartans (Which are just big) would give you a hard time. You're better off finding Pluck Foam Cases so that you can use to make your own shapes to fit your army and any non-standard shapes and forms it might have. Would also let you maximize Storage/Space ratio. For reference, if your pod, on its side, is taller than a Spartan / Baneblade, it'll have a hard time fitting in the bottom tray of the GW Foam. Additionally, since its egg shaped, unless the foam has sufficient give to let it sit flat when stowed, it might cause you some slight problems during transit since it'll be able to move around. Do a bit more research, tbh :p Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320970-carrying-case-question/#findComment-4350872 Share on other sites
Guiltysparc
hmm, maybe a pluck foam case for the big/irregular stuff and the middle size gw case for the infantry models... Soldier of Dorn
I have one of the Crusade cases, and I can pretty much confirm everything that Slips says. If you're planning on bringing anything much bigger than a Rhino, while not impossible, it can be difficult to fit in. Not impossible, but pretty hard. If you're transporting the same army constantly (I just grab whatever I need off my display and put it back when done, since I have multiple armies and am unwilling to buy multiple cases) pluck foam and other customizable setups are a much better option while being far cheaper. Guiltysparc
spartan, a couple dread pods, and a sicaran are the only things bigger than a rhino...my leviathans are magnetized at the waiste so they'll split apart for transport. I think i'd probably need two pluck foamers for the 2 tanks and 3 pods. Enigami
I have a large battle foam collection. They are on the pricy side, but I'm very pleased with the foam. If you can efficiently use the pre cuts, I'd go with those. They are excellent and have pre cuts for nearly everything. Anything else, grab some pluck foam. Soldier of Dorn
Another option might be just to get a big Citadel case (if you're gonna get one of them anyways) and get replacement pluck foam with similar dimensions to the trays (I think you can get them on Amazon) and just swap them out. One trick I have been known to use with big items (like Land Raiders, Drop Pods,Tyranid Monstrous Creatures et al) is to fit them into the bottom half of the tray and then flip the top half upside-down on top of them. It's not the most efficient use of space, but it'll work in a pinch. Theredknight
For my next army I am going to do plastic cases, metal sheet and magnets under my models, weapons don't break off and they are ready to play as soon as you take the top off rather than getting everyone out setting up etc etc. Look into it, it's cost effective too. God-Potato of Mankind
I have the big citadel one, it's great for infantry and basic tanks ~3hp (Predators, Lleman Russes etc) but anything large isn't ideal. So I carry my Spartans in a box. Just a regular, cardboard storage box. I stick a sponge divider between each Spartan and carry it upright and it's fine. I can't imagine the horror of trying to transport: Baneblade variants Fellblade Variants Dreadclaw/Kharybdis Knights Titans Any of these cannot be fit into a GW case unless you magnetise or bluetac them. They're just too big and oddly shaped. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320970-carrying-case-question/#findComment-4350939 Share on other sites
Ishagu
I buy lots of cases from KR, and honestly they're fine though the costs add up fast. You can buy boxes with foam cut outs for particular units, and then once you've collected a few boxes you can buy a bag or case to put them all in. Athrawes
I use one of the Large new GW cases and it fits my 2k Thousand sons: x40 space marine models on 32mm bases x6 Terminators x1 Contemptor Dreadnought x2 Javelin Attack Speeders x1 Sicaran Battle Tank x1 Damoclese command Rhino x1 Dreadclaw Drop pod and flight Stand The dreadclaw is what takes up the most space, basically just leave 1 half of the case empty for the drop pod. I magnetise sponsons anyway, saves so much space Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320970-carrying-case-question/#findComment-4351039 Share on other sites
marine7312000
Battlefoam has an option for custom foam layouts. They can be pricey but they have most of the shapes for GW and FW items already. If you really want something special though, they also have the option for truly custom trays where you trace on a piece of paper around the model to get the shape right and they'll laser cut the tray to match your shape. They also have sales every once in a while and their stacker boxes can take the place of cases without being super expensive. So what you spend on the trays you can save on the boxes. Or save even more money and just save the box from shipping and put trays inside that. Or just get one of the old GW plastic cases and toss the foam to put custom trays inside. Guiltysparc
I am liking the KR case's website and system of building the trays. It looks like i can get my whole planned army into one triple case for ~$250. Does anyone know if the leviathans will fit in the contemptor trays? I figured i'd send them an email asking, although i feel like i could just buy some pluck foam to make all the custom shapes... Guiltysparc
pulled the trigger on the KR case after emailing back and forth them...their sales support is awesome, the guy took what i had put together for tray load out and my army list and gave his recommendation, which was a bit better/more efficient than what i had come up with. Ishagu
Eventually I'll get one of their metal cases to put all my boxes in (currently using the backpack style things). Will make it very easy to transport large numbers of models around! Guiltysparc
i went with the kaiser 3, which is a padded textile bag with 3 of their cardboard cases. The bag is nice as it has a boatload of pockets on it that can fit things like the mini rule book, dice, etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/320970-carrying-case-question/#findComment-4356684 Share on other sites
