Starting BFG - What to buy?

I'm looking into starting BFG, probably playing as Imperial Fists Marines, but I don't even know where to look. I'd vastly prefer to have plastic models over metal ones, so where should I buy those? And what rulebooks do I need to start? Do I need to buy terrain or can I make my own?

Ok:

1) Good luck, you're starting with a game that has not had any rules/miniature support for over a decade.

2) The only plastic ships were the imperial and chaos cruisers, everything else was metal, including all space marine ships.

3) When GW pulled the models a year or two ago, their cost skyrocketed, everything went up by 100 % in the aftermarket, so a strike cruiser that retailed at £20 will now cost you about £40 - expect to drop around £100 putting a small fleet together

4) The rulebook will probably be going cheap (ish) on auction sites, but you can probably find a digital copy somewhere.

5) The official rulebook / boxed set has card stock planets and asteroids etc. You'll need a hell of a lot of counters. I'd try and find an original boxed set online.

6) GW have recently re-opened their specialist games division, and BFG is on the cards, so maybe in a year or two we might see some plastic ships.

Again, good luck!

Funnily enough, I just had a Helian Dreadnought come through the post - it's a nice sculpt and the mold line was almost invisible (it was also strategically placed), kinda what was expected at the price point I'll be honest. The model has nice clean lines, good proportions (compared to BFG cruisers) and has enough options for you to proxy it as a few of the usual Imperial cruiser classes no problem. Big thumbs up from me. :tu:

Love those Helian ships especially the large prow cannon on the other battleship. But if you're looking for good proxies try www.shapeways.com and then try some key word searches. You'd be amazed at what 3D printing can accomplish and some look enough like the original that most people will find a satisfactory proxy.
