Replacement for old school black ink

Recommended Posts

Ok folks, as the title suggests, I'm looking to replace my old pot of citadel black wash after a decade of faithful service. While I like the newer citadel washes just fine they're really a very different product.

My best guess is that so one like Vallejo will do something in the area I'm looking for, but I don't have much experience with their range.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Are you talking about the old inks (which weren't water-fast), or the first GW washes (which were water-fast)?

I think (i.e. others say) the paints & inks made by Coat D'Arms are the same as the 1990's-era round/hexagonal flip-top GW ones (the ones with the white caps), so maybe have a look and see if you can find them?  They're made by HMG Paints and distributed by Black Hat Miniatures in the UK, and I think Scalecreep Miniatures in the US.

I haven't tried the Vallejo inks, but I'd expect them to be similar.  Their washes are acrylic stains, like the GW washes, although I think they might be a bit thinner (I've only used their Umber Wash).

Alternatively, you can make your own using Winsor & Newton, Rowney, etc inks, as Brother Najanus posted.

Based on this, these should be the ones you're looking for, especially as they have a direct matchup to the Citadel colours both old and new on the page. Should be the Wash Black (rather than the Super Wash black)

Mine is the hexagonal pop top bottle. Probably dates back to 1998-ish.

Sounds like the last variant of the GW Coat D'Arms paints, then.  As Lucio says, you'll want their "Ink Wash Black" (#154) - not to be confused with their Black Super Wash (#169).
