Shaolin_Monkey
Curious to see what people have done for jump packs for MkIII armour. I'm tempted to make some soon but am completely on the fence on whether to use MkII or MkIV packs. Anyone have a preference or any pics of either? Show me your assault marines!! Also any fluff/other reason to choose one of the other would be appreciated. I just like the MkIII aesthetic and plan to keep it consistent. Marshal Rohr
I put a mark 2 pack on a mark 3 body tonight. I feel like it's hefty enough to believably lift the extra armor. Grotsmasha
mkIII is just up-armoured mkII, so technically mkII would be the "correct" jump pack....but rule of cool always trumps any "technically correct" aesthetic choice. So, go with what you like, what looks better to your eye. Dantay VI
I use Mark 2 jump packs. Mark 5's are very similar too http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20151113_221227.jpg http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20151113_221445.jpg http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20151113_221516.jpg http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20151113_221533.jpg http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20151113_221630.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/321277-mkiii-jump-packs/#findComment-4359279 Share on other sites
Ion
Mark III as jump pack armour doesn't really make sense to me personally, but if you want to go that route then the Mk II or V packs suit best. Mk IV would look really weird, and the more 'modern' packs would too. Luna707
I actually don't think there are mk III jump pack marines in the fluff. I remember reading somewhere that the added armor reinforcement over the mk II caused too much of a weight imbalance for stable flight with a jump pack Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/321277-mkiii-jump-packs/#findComment-4359317 Share on other sites
Dantay VI
Nothing much mentioned about Mark 3 jump marines. The uprated frontal armour made the mark 3 less efficient and caused increased wear on the servo's etc with in the armour. However the additional frontal armour made the suit ideally suited to warfare in confined spaces, such as void warfare, breaching actions and tunnel fighting. Besides rule of cool man, rule of cool. Mark 3 looks awesome with jump packs, in my humble estimation :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/321277-mkiii-jump-packs/#findComment-4359322 Share on other sites
Luna707
Yeah they do look super cool :) I would do it anyway with mkII packs Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/321277-mkiii-jump-packs/#findComment-4359326 Share on other sites
Ion
The whole 'confined spaces' part doesn't really go well with jump packs xD You could also try out these: http://maxmini.eu/conversion-bits/torsos-and-arms/Bronze-Pattern-Jump-Packs They look like they might have enough grunt to lift a Mk III armoured marine, but not sure if they go as well with the armour aesthetics as the Mk II kind Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/321277-mkiii-jump-packs/#findComment-4359327 Share on other sites
Loddfafnir113
Pretty sure Argel Tal has a jump pack and MkIII armour in the first half of First Heretic, though id have to double check. I'd agree MkII or MkV packs would look most suitable, though I'd be interested to see it with a MkIV pack. Marshal Rohr
I also tried the mark 4 plastic and resin versions :D the twin turbine has more of a heresy aesthetic, while the mark 4 looks like if he kicks his engine on he's gonna fly into you like an angry marine. Daemon2027
Forge World once said that Mark III wasn't suitable for jump packs because of the extra armour. However I dislike that as Mark III is awesome and looks awesome with a Mark II jump pack. Sandlemad
Not too hard to make a decent fluff excuse: say that the squad has to replace or repair their overcharged jump packs between missions due to the strain of lifting such heavy armour. Dantay VI
1, I said ideally suited, not exclusively used for confined spaces, 2. This is the heresy, armour and men were lost at horrific rates and many of te Legionnes Astartes had to work with what they got to hand... Knowing that the traitors had access to armour piercing rounds the loyalists used the uparmoured mark 2 suits (mark 3) with jump packs, in order to minimise their casualties and bring their specialist assault troops to bear upon the foe. This allowed the loyal legions to negate the traitors advantage of range and fight in a way which suited them. While not turning te tide of the heresy it did allow the loyalists to pull off some audacious victories and slow Horus enough for Terra to be further bolstered ahead of the final siege.. Shaolin_Monkey
Well the consensus seems to be with MkII packs then. Good to know, I was kinda leaning that way anyway. Will have to grab some and try them out. Thanks too for the pics Dantay they do look awesome. Relict
The Word Bearers Ashen Circle are canonically described as wearing "a variant of Mark III armor unique to the XVII Legion" in Tempest. So there is a fluff precedent. Personally, I see a Legionary kitted out this way being assigned to void combat - the jump pack to get them onto an enemy ship during an exoatmospheric operation, the Mark III armor to keep them alive once they've cut their way inside. Marshal Rohr
There are also void specific harnesses used to propel boarders towards their target. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/321277-mkiii-jump-packs/#findComment-4360675 Share on other sites
Charlo
Darkangels have a wing that is apparently breachers assault Marines. So that seems good too. Some 3rd party big packs work nicely with mkIII Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/321277-mkiii-jump-packs/#findComment-4360690 Share on other sites
Spinsanity
Ashen Circle wear MkIII and JumpPacks, which pretty much confirm the two are not mutually exclusive...
