War of the Fang?

Was curious for impressions to see worth getting considering:

1. Have loved all of Chris Wraight's stuff.

2. Not a SW fan but don't mind reading about them. Read Thousand Son, Wolf king etc. The only book left is Prospero burns is which I am reading now.

3. Not a 40k book person, read a few but have not liked. I really try to confine myself to HH setting due to money and time.

So with that in mind it looks like even though it is tagged as 40k it is says it is 32k so 1 only a thousand years after the HH timeline and also a sequel of sorts to Prospero burns/thousands sons.

Thoughts? Coverart is pretty deft though.

It's good. Better than Wraight's later SW stuff. Quality fighting (including a daemon primarch), good characters, well-paced plot, dark secrets, hints of what might have been, and a brilliant ending. It's a siege narrative, almost the entire book, so think something like Helm's Deep for tone. I'd say go for it.

It is indeed set in 32k but seeing as the only places depicted are Fenris and a few other worlds the Wolves are razing, it doesn't appear too different to the 41st millennium.

In terms of themes though, it's sort of the bridging piece between the 30k and 40k depictions of the wolves. A lot of the stuff you see Russ dwelling on in Wolf King have come to pass or are underway. In a certain light, it looks like a coda to A Thousand Sons and Prospero Burns. You're definitely going to get a lot more out of Battle of the Fang than someone who hadn't read them.

I didn't think Hunt for Magnus added much to Battle of the Fang; it more or less covers the same ground as the chapters about Ironhelm but it's decent action.

indeed if you are a fan of the thousand sons and space wolves then you will probably enjoy the siege - as mentioned, this is largely a siege tale, with some decent fights and some good little gems of conversation between some of the thousand sons with magnus included. Additionally some alluding to what if scenarios

I just finished reading it. Never been a fan of the 40k stories...hard to read those when you have the HH with the Emperor and Primarchs milling about. This is definitely good and I am not even a SW fan. It is well written and having just read Scars I found the reference Bjorn makes when fighting a dreadnaught that he felt sorry for the poor bastards ha ha and I think other comments about being in enclosed space with him as a Dreadnaught in Battle of the Fang. Great battles and love the Magnus stuff.

Look forward to getting my copy of Path of Heaven.

Naaaaah. That's Ironhelm. When you zoom in, you'll see a plate on his head. smile.png

Furthermore did Greyloc use an axe, while Ironhelm had two power fists if I'm not mistaking.

Is the dude in gold magnus? Because he doesn't look very daemony

Magnus in Battle of the Fang is fractured with lots of bits of himself spread throughout the galaxy. The point of the prologue / the hunt for him was that by "killing" that one fragment, they unchained him and allowed him to invade Fenris. He's fragmented in Deathfire during the Heresy already, or rather, has been ever since Prospero and his warp-gazing from the Planet of Sorcerers. He's lost a hold of his physical form, hence the freedom to appear as he wants to.

It's definitely Ironhelm. The scene during that fight is described exactly as you see it.

Although fragmented pscyhe or not, a Primarch is a Primarch and the thought of someone harming one is laughable. They are described as being above an Astartes as an Astartes is to a standard Human.
