30K Legion Centurion?

If I build my Centurion with Terminator Armour & a Pair of Lightning Claws; then upgrade the role to a "Primus Medical" with additional wargear of "Narthecium"/"Needle Pistol"

My question is since I have a Pair of Lightning Claws may I still use the Needle Pistol in the shooting phase?

..or..

Do I loose the pistol altogether for the claws?

There is no limit on how many weapons (and other wargear) a model can have, so unless the rules say the weapon is replaced the model still has it, but infantry can at most use one ranged weapon and two CC weapons (one for the profile and one for the extra attack).

A Primus Medicae in TDA and two lightning claws can shoot the needle pistol in the shooting phase and use the lightning claws (with the extra attack) in the assault phase.

Seriously ?

I was under the impression that a model with a pair of lightning claws discards all other hand held weapons and would only retain things like a servo-arm mounted conversion beamer on a Forge Lord for example.

But that's probably RAI as opposed to RAW.

No, they specifically swap out their Combi-Bolter and Power Weapon in TDA for a Pair Of Claws. The Needle Pistol and Narthecium are separate to all that.

It does mean that a Bog Standard TDA Primus Medicae does in fact gain +1A For Having a Pistol and Non-Specialist CCW which is why I love him with my Imperial Fists since I can give him a Solarite Power Gauntlet which is a Power Fist without Specialist Weapon.

Sure. But who says they retain the needle gun ?

Normally, when you swap power / artificer armour for a suit of terminator armour, the model replaces all its regular weapons with the ones that come with the TDA.

A Centurion or Praetor (or any other Consul) don't retain their Bolt Pistol & Chainsword either when they swap for TDA.

Then say you do this:

Centiurion -> Equip With TDA and swap all weapons accordingly -> Upgrade to Primus which gives Needle Pistol and Narthecium.

What then?

The Needle Pistol and Narthecium are also part of his standard issue gear much like a Librarians Force Weapon and that doesnt get lost when swapping from PA to TDA even though it replaces the stock Chainsword the Centurion has.

Why do you even have to ask?

Because it's a good question and asking questions leads to solutions ?

And any other model out there has to discard their hand held ranged weapon when going for a pair of claws.

But the door for arguments swings in both ways, so let's leave it at that.

The rules specifically state what you get rid of when you take lightning claws.  They also specifically state which things you can't take when you take a consul.  It may be they meant to say "replace bolt pistol with a needle pistol", in which case you can't take lightning claws on a primus medicae as you can't swap a bolt pistol twice.

It is similar with taking a bolter/volkite charger/combi bolter.  These are in addition to bolt pistol and chainsword and therefore would be kept when taking lightning claws. I did a Raven Guard centurion with lightning claws and a charger modelled as two sepenta mounted on the wrists, representing the two shots.
