m0nolith
After applying the first coat of Gloss/Satin Varnish to seal in the paint job and after applying the oil weathering, do I need to then do a second coat of matte or satin varnish to seal in the oil paints? Are there any long term negative or detrimental effects on the model when you dont do a second coat of varnish after the oil weathering? Bat33.1
Are you applying your oils after the first varnish coat to protect the acrylic underneath? If so then I would varnish once everything is complete to pull everything together and prevent any issues with the oils later. I'd give a good 48 hours at least for the oils to dry before putting acrylic varnish on top though. winterdyne
Yes, your finger oils can lift oil weathering. Seal it. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/321469-question-about-weathrering-with-oils-and-varnish/#findComment-4365558 Share on other sites

JeffTibbetts
Yeah, seal it. Another thing to consider is the difference in the finish for the different paints. In my experience, the oils can look very different from the acrylics. A nice matte or satin coat will bring everything together for a consistent look. m0nolith
The reason I wanted to avoid the second coat of varnish initially was because im doing bronze as my base and the oil streaks were not a metallic, so I wanted a contrast between the metallic color of the bronze and the streaks, grime, dry mud ect ect. I tried it out with a satin finish at the end and im happy to say that it works :D The test panel came together very well. I'll be doing this on my next tank for sure.
