Clarifying Fulgrim's fall (HH series)

Recommended Posts

Just for clarification, the original story was a tragedy, with Fulgrim being slowly corrupted by the Daemon within the Blade of Laer without realising. This lead him to do battle with his beloved brother, killing him. In that last moment, when he realised in horror how far he had fallen and what he had done, his possession was complete. The Daemon took over completely, and Fulgrim would remain trapped in his own mind.

The new version jumped the shark in its endless stupidity and is that Fulgrim beheaded his brother and then out-evil'd the Daemon, making the entire thing pointless and turning Fulgrim into just another moustache-twiddling Chaos character who is just plain evil and that's it. It makes him the only Traitor Primarch whose fall isn't based in some deep personal issues (most of which are the Emperor's fault). Fulgrim is just evil, in spite of the previous lore (which still exists) about his close relationship with Ferrus Manus and his adoration of the Emperor.

Did I get that right?

Well, the original original story was that Horus simply managed to convince Fulgrim to join him, to replace the Emperor to create a perfect humanity, and that the Chaos Powers were the key for this, upon which Fulgrim gave himself to Slaanesh willingly.

The daemon sword thing is a BL retcon. I suppose Fulgrim outwitting that daemon sword is then a retcon-retcon. But I am not all up to date on the latest retcons. We are at the point where newer BL novels and newer FW books often contradict what previous BL novels or FW books had established (retconned), so it is hard to keep up.

The Reflection Crack'd left it somewhat open, although McNeill can not really do subtlety so I am unsure. But I think it is the latter. GW and BL know when they have a good story, because they do everything in their power to ruin it.
