drop pod scorching with an airbrush

anyone have an simple method to airbrush scorch marks on a drop pod? i have two drop pod models that are otherwise finished and I'm terrified of ruining them! I don't really have room to experiment! perhaps there's a tutorial kicking around that I might have overlooked? Mostly, it's the the colour choices that are giving me analysis paralysis. black paint? brown paint?

Emphasis on the simlpe! I prefer a clean, almost illustrated look for my army, so I'm thinking it would have to be more abstract (I would want to avoid heavy, realistic weathering at all costs). with this in mind, I just want to do some light scorching on the bottom of the drop pod just a little ways past the hinges to imply re-entry (and hide some corner cutting).

winters SEO has a good simple tutorial on youtube for weathering drop pods using washes and spray cans.  Perhaps it is more harsh weathering than what you are looking for, but maybe it will give you some ideas.  It's what I'm planning on using when I get around to weathering my pods.  Good luck and please let us know what you decide to do and how it turns out.

PS.  I looked at those photos in your links, and you are a very talented painter!

aw, thanks for the painting compliments!

I've seen winters SEO drop pods and his weathering is on the very extreme end of the spectrum. wanting to find something a little more conservative.

even some photo samples of something in the vein I'm looking for would help.

This is mine:

Used dryad bark with some black, then straight black. For the directional scorching i cut a small stencil out of paper and super lightly sprayed those same colors.

Oooh. the bottom of yours is what I'm looking to do with mine. Never would have thought of a stencil. Will give it a shot! Thanks!

Will post results!

as for everyone else, thanks for the help as well! I appreciate it!

Its in the garbage at this point but it literally was the pod assembly instruction paper with a single chevron cut out with an exacto. I think i ended up cutting even that down a maybe a 4X4" square so i could move it around easier and i could lower it for smaller marks or just easier repositioning. I thinned the paint with a little ammonia free windex to make sure it was still translucent too. I held it maybe a mm or so off the model to to make sure the lines weren't too sharp as well.

Hopefully that helps, let me know if that makes sense!

Yea it evaporates super quickly so goes on crazy thin giving some pretty magical transitions.

Brilliant! Now I need to track it down. You just buy this at Target (I chose them, because Minnesota, of course) then? I don't know that I've ever seen a bottle of it unless it looks pretty normal.

Walmart if i recall correctly, but I don't see why Target wouldn't carry it.

Sidenote: One thing ive noticed is that due to the thinness, it needs to get varnished after for sure and avoid touching it with your hands while working or it will rub away.
