Bloody Legionnaire
Fellow modelers and basing experts, I have used bark a few times with basing and I'm planning on using it for the rest of my Thunderwolves. I think I need a decently strong clear varnish to seal it and keep it from chipping because every piece of bark I have done so far chips really easily. Do you have any recommendations as far as clear coating goes? I'm thinking acrylic varnish wont be strong enough.. maybe nitrocellulose lacquer? I know that's what they use on guitar finishes and it's pretty tough stuff. Jalgar
Lacquer is good but if you look at older vintage guitars you will see a lot of chipping and rub off. Urethane is probably the strongest finish. I would use acrylic enamel over lacquer personally. Enamel seems to be between urethane and laquer as far as durability and a lot easier to find in rattle cans. Bloody Legionnaire
Thanks man! I'll do some looking for urethane then. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/321899-bark-stone-sealing/#findComment-4378715 Share on other sites
Jalgar
Sure thing. If you cannot find it, I do not think using enamel will gimp you at all. The urethane I sell is automotive clear coat and it comes in quart and gallons and is crazy expensive. Good luck! TheOneTrueZon
Another route is doing press molds of the wood forms you like and then recasting them in resin. Seleucus
I find that a cheap but long lasting method of sealing bark is to use wood/craft glue, mixed 50:50 with water, painted on liberally and left to dry. It's a trick I picked up from model railway builders. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/321899-bark-stone-sealing/#findComment-4384909 Share on other sites
Tygwyn
Any kind of PVA glue mixed 50:50 (as said above) has always worked well. You can go to 30:70 and do a couple of coats for a 'clearer' finish too.
