MakoBoy88
Morning, Had a very interesting conversation with some of my local fellow players about what starts a project for us. And, more importantly could we find a correlation between how one starts a project and the ratio of the ones that actually get traction, and even those that finish. So for example, we have a guy who reads a book, finds a character, buys/ makes that character and paints him. Then paints a unit for him. Then a transport. Two months later had had 2500 points. Then another guy reads some rules. Makes a list on Battlescribe. Proxies some stuff. Buys some models. Gets bored moves on. I tend to imagine a strategy for a part of the army id like to make work like, Eidolon with Jump Pack Palantine Blades, Perturabo with Iron Circle, Guilliman with his Suzerains. The iconic dramatic set pieces. But very few come off. What about you? How do your projects start? And how do you make them slot in and out of your project queue? MikhalLeNoir
I for my part start posing around. I try to make a few cool poses for a unit or characters. Painting is not my strength so I mostly make kitbashes and when it comes to painting I simply suck and procastrinate myself. MakoBoy88
I get that totally. I'm the other way around though my painting is ok (when it gets done) it's my modelling that sucks. So i tend to make all of the traditional static poses that the kits come in and then regret it straight away. Frater Cornelius
I decide on something, start it, then the 'grass is greener' syndrome kicks in big time, everything comes to a hold, rinse and repeat. I hate it :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/321950-project-starts/#findComment-4380247 Share on other sites
Commander Hachard
I decide on something, start it, then the 'grass is greener' syndrome kicks in big time, everything comes to a hold, rinse and repeat. I hate it :D 100% with you here, I have more unfinished projects than I do completed. Hopefully with this years ETL I'll finally finish a space marine army for the first time in 20 years. Xenaur
I like to just pick something that I think will be cool and try to make a fluffy but competitive army around it but I don't really go into project with a definite plan on how it will end. Like I know I want to do a Thousand Sons and a Custodes army but I have no real idea on what's going to be in them and they're probably going to ran in parallel with Alpha Legion project because I like to dabble. MakoBoy88
That's fair enough :) it's crazy to see also how long people wait between projects. Some wait years. Some it's days haha. mactire
I'm "lucky" in that I'm a little OCD. I have to finish a project before I could think of another one. That's why I'm about three transports and two DP's away from finishing my Great Company. I have started a few troops for my next Company and have picked away with the Orks(Stormclaw) and DV set but primarily I keep to the main project. This has been about seven years. Robzilla
For me it boils down to an idea that I research the hell out of, agonise over the decisions (units, paint scheme etc) come up with lists and fluff for, and then dive in 100%. Until something else hits me and I abandon project a in favour of project b, and the cycle continues. im determined my alpha legion will get finished before I move on to night lords or world eaters. noigrim
I begin projects for their fluff, then I guide myself for the games, if after beginning a project I get a sizeable amount of them It begins to gather speed until it's finally completed; however should the number of games be insufficient the project is abandoned. About comleting them I put myself a finishing date and then procastinate till some days before, when the modelling/painting frenzy begins. Jerichus
I'm the type who will think about starting about 4 different armies at the same time. Usually I find something really interesting about them fluff-,paint scheme-, or model-wise. So I force myself to sit down and decide, make a pro/con list, etc. I'm usually able to commit to one project at a time(although I might give other stuff furtive glances from time to time) I'm kinda fortunate in that I can't bring myself to stop painting a unit/model once I've gotten the base layer down, so I just need to make myself take those first steps. As for planning what I'm gonna do I usually think of a couple things for the project(being able to run DA Iron/Ravenwing and Vanilla, or WE Angron/Red butchers and armoured assault for example), since I don't like having only one lists' worth of models. It also helps because If I'm getting bored of painting bikes I can switch to tanks or something.
