Last of the "Dog Faced" soldiers. My IV Legion WiP

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to build a small(ish) IV Legion force built around the concept of the Iron Warriors as foot sloggers and Grunts extraordinaire.

Everything is in varying WiP at the moment. I mostly wanted to get pics posted and create a thread in prep for the up coming ETL (where I will be adding to the force). Also I am trying to figure out why I can't post from my computer and have to use the tablet, so sorry for errors.

Any feedback or pointers/tips are always welcome. Thanks for looking!

Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words.

Being as this is my ETL-V WiP thread I was hoping to get some Frater input on my strategy for this year's event. I have broken down what I have to paint and have it built to the painting stage (I partially assemble before painting). My plan is to make an complete one vow before moving on to the next.

Anyway, what are people's thoughts/opinions on this breakdown for the ETL-V

Vow #1

15 Tactical marines

Apothecary

10 Reconnaissance Marines

Vow #2

10 Breachers

10 Iron Havocs

Contemptor Dreadnaught

Vow #3

Knight Gallant

Sicaran Battle Tank

Vow #4

Knight Crusader

Sicaran Battle Tank

I also have two drop pods and a MK-Ic Rhino in my left over pile that I can add into the mix.

My theory/reasoning behind the make up of the vows was to get the "masses" painted first before moving on to the "big" stuff. Does this sound like sound reasoning or should it be the other way around? All of it will be enjoyable to paint so it's not as if I have to "get this out of the way first".

Would it be better to leave the vows as they are?

Reverse the vows and do the "big work" first?

Mix/mingle the vows and have big/little combinations within each vow?

So I am trying to add a HQ choice to my army and I am torn between my love for Chaplains (which don't seem to fit IW fluff) and a Siege Breaker (which I have no real concept of).

To my mind a siege breaker is the one guy that literally "breaks the siege" by any means. Whether it be tactics or brutality. With that in mind I began knocking up a mini from scavenged pieces.
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w291/meadows88/ETL%20V/75B47AEF-AE6D-4B88-8B24-A73E02BE65A0_zpssy1srvnc.jpg

I wanted the servo-skulls as a way to represent the "tank hunter" bonus that the guy passes to any unit he joins. The axe is to force a breach and the combo-flamer is to hold it.

I also built a few phosphex bombs out of the little nubs that are left over from the injection process on the bases. Everything has a purpose to the Iron Warriors smile.png

Thoughts? C&C? Is it even close to what a "Siege Breaker" is supposed to be?

Any input is always welcome.

I decided on a House/Clan symbol for my Knights today.

Painting it around the battle damage at the shins was a true joy :)

I think it captures the feral/pirate aspect of some of the early households fairly well.

Wow, looking great across the board so far man!

That Siegebreaker is definitely my favorite of your conversions so far. He just oozes IV legion menace.

Question for you. What shade of bronzey metallic have you used on the trim of that tactical squad? It's lovely and does such a better job than gold for the IVth.

@ Flint - Thanks for the praise! The trim on my IW is done with VGC* Wash (Sepia Shade) in a 1:1 mix. I usually do two coats to give it a richer color as well as allow for more saturation around bolts and in recesses. Other than the different washes, Sepia vs. Nuln oil, the entire mini is painted Leadbelcher as a base.

*Vallejo Game Color

Awesome! Thanks man.

I'm going to have to give that a try. It sounds like starting with a base metal and just washing it the color you want takes a lot of the time out of the color selection process :d

I like the Sepia shade over base metal as it comes out as a dirty bronze, which I see the IW wearing rather than gold.

If I use "old gold" as a base there is a significant difference.

The two colors allow me to have officers with distinctions while still having a haggard and worn appearance, if that makes sense.

I agree. The desaturated, muted nature of the gold you're using means that it doesn't shine out from the silver too much, and really helps sell the force as gritty, dogged and determined.

That's supported by the builds and posing, too. They're subtle, understated and convincing, which fits in nicely with your stated goal. It would have been easy to end up with dull, undynamic postures or having the Iron Warriors looking defeated, but having occasional points of dynamism (like the upraised hammer and Praetor/sergeant in the second Cataphractii squad) helps sell them as simply experienced and unfazed by battle.

Stand-out bits for me are the apothecary (love that glowing green), the most recent sergeant (great combination of bits) and the bare-armed chap in the assault squad. Keep it up – looking forward to seeing what you have planned beyond the vows.

@Apologist- thank you for stopping by and providing insight. The bare armed guy has been a favorite of mine from the time I began building him. I am tempted to do a "trench squad" along the lines of the World Eaters that are falling to Khorne.

@HS - I hope it's the illithid aspect and not the reason my GF teases me about it all the time now. If not no judgement. LoL

Finished the scratch build on the Knight interior

Did as much as I could for my first vow for ETL-V

And began work on my Force Commander

Any guesses who it is I'm attempting? It is good to be out of classes for the summer. Lots of energy and no outlet due to weather.

As always any C&C is welcome and appreciated.

Kyr Vhalen? He's the bloke what's missing an eye, right?

Nice Knight interior you've got there. The pink fuzzy dice are a lovely touch. :tu:

Yea it's Vhalen. The hole in the face gives it away I guess.

My Iron Warriors are going to be Crusade Era, pretty much pre-fall, which means if and when I ever learn to play the game I can use them as loyalist or traitors. I have Marines Malevolent for the good side, and Night Lords for the bad, This will give me a neutral party. Balance in all things as he saying goes.

Day one update for ETL-V

I decided to start with the breachers as I have been wanting to paint them for awhile now.

They are still WiP, but I have a wedding to attend today. I am hoping to have the squad finished by morning (except for the left shoulder that is in the mail from FW.

C&C, tips, or any other replies are always welcome.

Still working on the ETL vows. I love how much work can be done to tell a story on a Knight :)

The other leg chain will have skulls and a few Imperial Fist shoulder pads.

I plan to have helmets from various chapter hanging from the front of the Knight's chest and another chain of skulls on one of the shoulders. I am thinking of it a a predecessor to the later "spikes bits" in 40K if that makes sense.

Thoughts, C&C, better ideas are always welcome.

@Bjorn - the Iron Isles are reavers and that's what I'm going for. However their symbol rises from the depths (which makes sense seeing as how they are sea faring people's). I found a similar pic with an octopus coming down which makes more sense to me for a space faring people.

Progress is still being made and my vows are still going to be made. This one and my planned follow on vows :)

So much detail on Knights it's easy to get lost in them, especially when you have to stop yourself from adding too much extra.
