Bloody Legionnaire
When is it recommended to strip paint from a model like a land raider as opposed to hitting it wish a coat of black and then base coating again? Chaplain Raeven
Depends on how thick your first paintjob is. If your details are already fading because of the layers, stripping is recommended. If not, just re-priming should be sufficient. Closet Skeleton
Sadly, sometimes you don't know until you finish the second paint job. So its safer to just strip it anyway but most of the time you can probably judge for yourself at a glance. Chaplain Raeven
Agreed, I wouldn't prime again without stripping the whole model either. But it's better to have multiple choices. When I doubt, strip the model. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/322190-to-strip-paint-or-not-to-strip-paint/#findComment-4387775 Share on other sites
Tyberos the Red Wake
Stripping it properly is always the best option. ALWAYS. At best, you would HAVE to strip to get a good paintjob, and at worst, all you did was waste a little bit of stripping liquid and time if you did it properly. Obviously if you wreck your model or melt it somehow by stripping it wrong, that would be the real worst case scenario, but this assumes you're going to strip it safely and properly. The only time you don't "need" to strip it is if the previous paintjob was very thin. Like from an airbrush. Even then, you should strip it anyway, especially if it was varnished.
