Brendaen
So, with this new Flyer supplement, I'm looking to add some Air Support for my Mechanized/Armored Company. I have a Valkyrie/Vendetta and a Vulture, but I want something new. SInce I can't really afford FW flyers right now, I'm interested in the new SM Stormhawk Interceptor as a dedicated AA flyer. I really like how that ship looks and plan on painting it up to match my army. Question: Don't have the book yet, does it allow you to take Formations of flyers or does this just update current flyers? I am not opposed to taking an allied detachment of SM (Techmarine HQ and a small squad of scouts just to get this flyer. WarriorFish
The problem with the supplement from a Guard point of view right now is that neither the Vendetta or any FW flyer exists as far as it is concerned - which makes them entirely unusable with it! An FAQ to address this is all we can hope for - that or taking an allied force of course, though that isn't so much a Guard question any more. That is to say that the flyers can do their own flying thing without too much thought to the ground forces. The interceptors are good for shooting down enemy flyers but less so against the ground. The new Marine flyer does look pretty good and I gather has quite nice rules. As far as I'm aware it does include new formations for the flyers, or at least updates to them. It also features special "wings", but they're how you deploy and move rather than as part of the list building I think. So you don't need to take an allied CAD if you plan on taking a few flyers, otherwise you can't go wrong with some Scouts and a cheap HQ. I like Techmarines, they can do some handy repairs too :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/322269-mechanized-company-air-support/#findComment-4389962 Share on other sites
duz_
I think you can just take 2 as a minimum and call it a flyer wing / detachment/formationThe interceptor actually will be pretty good at AA from what I recallFighters are the only flyers to have skyfire and only suffer -1BS to ground targets (excluding skimmers full BS for them)So no worse then a guardsmen flyer Also there's reserve bonuses too for taking themForget exact details Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/322269-mechanized-company-air-support/#findComment-4390229 Share on other sites
WarriorFish
-1BS against ground targets seems a small price to pay for the large advantage in shooting aircraft. Ulrik_Ironfist
I too am looking for ways to enhance my mechanized forces. Though I have 2 Vultures, 2 Valkyries, and a Vendetta. I suppose I could use the Emperor's spear formation to get the Valks and Vendetta in the list, and use my FA slots for my Vultures, but the question is what to put in the valks? Also is putting 5 flyers on the table really such a good idea? I like combined arms, but even that sounds a bit daft to me... Brendaen
Picked up the new SM flyer today. I may just magnetise the kit and field it as a Vulture/Vendetta counts as.. It is a sweet looking ship... Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/322269-mechanized-company-air-support/#findComment-4391166 Share on other sites
