Varnish clouding issues :(

Recommended Posts

So this happened to me today for the first time since I've been using it.

The matte varnish I have decided to cloud up, ruining a bunch o' models I'd been working on, which was frustrating to say the least!

Does anyone know a way to fix it short of repainting the models?  It's mainly in the recesses...

Olive oil.

During the Christmas holidays I had issue varnish my models due to the low temp & what seem like none stop storms during December to January.  It was suggested that I try olive oil to fix the models that where badly effected.

  • Apply olive oil onto part of the models that are effected.  I just use a old standard brush
  • Leave it for half a hour, hour if you want?
  • Just use water with a little bit of washing up liquid mix into it.  I use a standard brush again & also use paper towel to dab the water just to remove the olive oil from the model.

The varnish will still be on the model, but this just remove the cloud/frost look.

I made a post over on my Iron Warriors army log about this just around the start of the year.  Sadily don't have photos of the models with the frost/cloud look, but I've shown what the models look like after the above was all done.

Applying gloss or even just more matte varnish on it can help clear up cloudiness. Either the varnish activates the existing layer, or, more likely, it fills/covers the clouded area with more transparent varnish since the cloudiness/clarity of varnish is based on light refraction.

I'm uncomfortable even with my natural skin oils on my electronics and miniatures. I always wash my hands with soap. I can't even imagine putting olive oil on my miniatures, it'd be like having a pimply teenager rub them all over his forehead. But then again, oil paints are oil-based, so what do I know.
