Making a display board. Opinions and advice needed!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I've just got my hands on two 2'x6' plywood boards with the intention of making a gaming board from them.

I'm in a bit of a quandary as to how to proceed with them though. As it stands, I think I have two options as detailed below.

Board A) Use them as a 'base' board and get myself a Realm of Battle board or similar to go on top of them

Board cool.png Make up a battlefield on the boards and use them 'as is'.

Pros and cons of each as I see it are:

Board A

Pros

- Modular. I can vary the terrain by the layout of the RoB tiles.

- Expandable. I can buy other realm of battle boards in future

Cons

EXPENSIVE!

Board B

Pros

- Cheap. Wont cost as much as the above as I could just paint it first off then add terrain etc over time.

- Will be a lot quicker to complete.

Cons

- Layout could get 'old'

- Not modular. What you see is what you will always have.

So, question(s) time.

How would you proceed? Why? Are there any other options I haven't considered? What would you use to build the terrain if you go for 'Option B'?

Should say, I have quite a bit of Wall of Martyrs terrain to put on the board but want to have hills, craters etc so the GW terrain is still 'bought' then played rather than being on the table and not removable.

Thanks for the advice in advance guys!

EDIT

And by display I mean gaming. Mods - any chance you can change the thread title for me? Can't seem to figure out how to do it! Cheers!

I'm not quite sure what you mean by option a). Do you plan to fix the realm of battle tiles on the 2x6 boards? If you do, I don't see how this is still modular. If you don't glue the tiles, what do you need the planks for anyways?

I'd say cut the 2x6 boards into three 2x2 tiles each and paint/sculpt the battlefield on them. If you plan how to paint them you will have tiles that are just as modular as the RoB tiles, for a fraction of the price.

Oh and you can change the title yourself. Just use the full editor.

I can suggest what I'm more or less doing, I've built a table with an MDF base that is 6X4, I use the Urban tablescapes tiles from SWM, but if I'm feeling like playing on a plains type table, or even ice type, I'd just roll out some appropriately covered felt, some terrain, and voila new table environment! Eventually I do plan on buying some of the Rolling Plains tiles, and then building modular 1x1 tiles for zone mortalis. Personally I prefer 1x1 tiles because of the flexibility and variability that's possible.

Option A is viable. If you were going to buy Realm of Battle, there's no point in buying planks to begin with. Either way, you'll need a table, so you either have to put your 4x6 planks on top of a table, then Realm of Battle on top of that, or you could just put the Realm of Battle tiles on top of the table and skip the planks. Going with the planks as your table also gives you the opportunity to make a much more detailed table as high as you want, or with deep trenches, and in any landscape. RoB is very limited.

Therefore, I suggest building a table out of your planks. I personally would have gone with three slabs of 4x2 but that's just for storage purposes. If you want to make it super modular, saw the boards into 2x2 squares. Either way, you're going to need to appropriate an existing 6x4 table, build one of your own, or buy three 2x4 cheap white folding tables that people use at hotels, conventions, barbecues, meetings, etc to support your board.
