Making flat varnish more matte

Recommended Posts

I have been using the Model Masters acrylic gloss and float coat varnishes and I really like how well they do. I just finished put some flat coat over a few gloss coats on my Bloodthirster and I noticed it causes the model to a little too flat. Is there any body well versed in the airbrush that can give me a few tips? I think I remember reading that adding a drop of gloss into the mix would help keep the finish from being too flat but I wasn't sure.

You can certainly mix gloss and matte varnish to get different finishes. Try a Satin varnish too, as that lies somewhat between the two

I been sealing with Future floor polish through my airbrush lately. It's got a great protective quality, but it's very glossy. What I've been doing to great effect is shooting a mix of Lahmian Medium and 'Ard Coat afterwards to bring it back in line with a regular Citadel paint. I use mostly Lahmian (which is way too matte on it's own), but then I did a brush in 'Ard Coat and use that to mix it. I usually add just a dipped brushful or two of water as well just to help it run a little more smoothly. It works wonderfully! I'd say it's maybe 6 or 7 parts Lahmian with 1 part 'Ard Coat, and then 2 or 3 parts water. Basically just a touch of the gloss takes the dustiness out of the medium. Try it out.
