infyrana
Couldn't see an old thread to necro... Sure, there are a tonne more options that look cooler and do the job better than the Castaferrum boxnought... But why not have a bit of banter to discuss the pros and cons for those of us who might want to field one or more for whatever reason? In my case, that's the hope of adding to a small Raven Guard force that I'm trying to create with my extra beaky marines. I have the footsloggers, but I have no heavy guns or the more common rapier batteries. Should I field some boxnoughts with ranged weaponry like TLLC+ML, or go for CCW's in pods... or am I just better off buying more pods and dropping melta/plasma behind the lines? If this thread has been done before - please link me to it and I'll take a look! Theredknight
If they get a price drop then if ld field them. As it is a cortus dread is much better value! LtDan
Ive got a couple of box noughts I'm going to be fielding for my deathguard in zm. Inferno cannon and chainfist w melta gun. I'm going to be using the ironclads as they look cool Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/322648-boxnoughts-in-30k-legion-lists/#findComment-4402003 Share on other sites
Terminus
The box-dreads do have a very distinct role, and that is the Mortis variant. It gets the same intercepting ability and BS5 as its big contemptor brother. The lack of save isn't as significant when you can just park them in cover, so you're saving 30 points by dropping to AV12. The biggest problem is that you can't take talons of Mortis dreadnoughts for some ridiculous reason. infyrana
Thanks for the replies so far. Theredknight: Yeah, I don't expect them to compete with the majority of other options available. Sadly I just do not own an excess of Contemptors, but I do have an excess boxnoughts that I'd like to use for something - hence this thread! LtDan: Can't wait to hear how your battle report goes, please feel free to share your experience with it in here! That Inferno Cannon has always peaked interest, might have to convert an arm for one! Terminus: Ah glad to hear, I have a Mortis Auto Cannon variant which could be useful for something. Any thoughts on a Talon of TLLC's and CCW's or ML's ? ElectricPaladin
I find them pretty unimpressive compared to contemptors... with the possible exception of missile launcher mortises and flamestorm cannons. LtDan
You can buy inferno cannon arms bud. I figure as I play deathguard they get shred. If its in zm I then get +1str as already have shred haha. So can see my talon of them being nasty. I do love the box naughts, you don't see enough of them, everyone always wants contemptors Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/322648-boxnoughts-in-30k-legion-lists/#findComment-4402150 Share on other sites
infyrana
LtDan, zero budget, means until that changes I was looking to re-purpose some of what I have. For an Inferno cannon I could use the spare LR Redeemer flamers I have, not sure how I could do the other ML arm though. LtDan
ML arm? Missile launcher? That's fair enough bud. I reckon you can sort out some cool ones from a redemmer. If have a multimelta arm cut the front off and add the redemmer one. Charlo
I was always put off the missile launcher as it is a huge bank of warheads that shoots a single round per turn... infyrana
Speaking of Box-Missile Launcher pods.. are they affected by DG's Creeping Death RoW ? ...maybe I should re-utilise them for my DG instead of my RG! Charlo
I mean, paying however many points for a few S5 frag templates isn't the most amazing thing - but they aren't bad. In a talon? Could convince me perhaps. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/322648-boxnoughts-in-30k-legion-lists/#findComment-4402285 Share on other sites

shandwen
I've built a few mortis legion dreads recently for my ultramarines. The cost drop for not taking the conteptors is nice, as is the hope that talons will arrive soon (the faq actually lists legion mortis dread talon, but they lack the actual talon rule.). Sure would be. A standard box dred with a Flamestorm can still be a fun backfield camper, cheap enough to include with the firepower to protect objectives. I'd drop pod it and add a Chain-fist or whatever so it was ready for anything. And on the email I wouldn't bother too much - the new Army list is out in a couple of months or so. It's confirmed to be at the Forge World open day on the 17th July. If we are getting Talons they will be in there :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/322648-boxnoughts-in-30k-legion-lists/#findComment-4402861 Share on other sites
Noserenda
I run a couple of Talons of box dreads in my Iron Warriors for siege work :D Broadly they are handy for being relatively cheap and the extra attack buff has helped :) Going over their loadouts... Plasma and Chainfist: Good backfield defender, makes folks worry but overall not actually great Flamestorm: Amazing distraction, noone ever wants it anywhere near them :D Mortis: Ive found dual lascannons most effective, MLs and Autocannons especially are fairly worthless for shooting at Astartes flyers. Also quite handy for ground based AT work too :) Various Paired CC Weapons: Pretty threatening but a contemptor really does it better these days. Fun though :) And nothing like getting a wrecker dreadnought into a crunchy fortification :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/322648-boxnoughts-in-30k-legion-lists/#findComment-4403699 Share on other sites
infyrana
Noserenda: So you'd happily recommend the Flamestorm cannon and mortis Las Cannons, but keep mortis ML or AutoC's for light anti-tank work (not flyers)? Do you like to keep them cheap or add any particular upgrades? Noserenda
Pretty much :D With the Xiphon and some other lighter flyers around things have shifted a bit recently but for Storm Eagles, Cestus rams and the local thunderhawk anything short of Lascannons tends to bounce off long enough for them to deploy a cargo of pain :/ Upgrades wise if i have some spare points ill chuck on HKs but the Havoc is off role and i think a mortis survives through clever placement and bigger threats rather than ceramite :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/322648-boxnoughts-in-30k-legion-lists/#findComment-4403901 Share on other sites
