Tamiya Sprays?

Hi all.

 

I was just wondering if anybody had any experience using tamiya sprays at all? 

I'm wanting to start a small Alpha Legion force in a turquoise colour, but the only spray I can seem to find that is turquoise-ish is made by tamiya. The tamiya stuff seems to be made to go on RC car shells etc, so wasn't sure if it would be any good going on plastic + resin.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Looks like the turquoise one is lacquer, so watch out. That said, their Fine Surface Primer in light grey is amazing and it's also lacquer. But it's so flat, fine, thin, and sandable it feels like an awesome acrylic, or like the Testors Dullcote equivalent of primer. Dullcote, ironically, is also lacquer, and people rarely have problems with it.

 

I think you should be okay, but just go very light and don't soak the model. You may also want to look up the differences of working with lacquer compared to acrylics, such as drying times and fumes. Tamiya sells thinners that always contain turpentine, alcohol and other stuff in them to work with lacquer so you might want that if you're going to be using lacquer as more than just a primer that you will completely paint over.

Tamiya sprays are great. As always, the golden rule is multiple thin coats.

Their grey primer is the pinnacle of primer aerosols for me.

I've used their primers on a number of miniatures, and they work great.  The price is a bit absurd, though- much like GW's cost.  However, you're going to get a consistent product every time, unlike some of the bargain spray paints out there (Army Painter, I'm looking at you) which can be a bit hit or miss.
I've not used any of their colors for miniatures, but I have used a few of the gloss coats on scale model cars- I would highly recommend agitating the cans very thoroughly before use- as the paint is heavier than the propellant.  If you're planning on using the color as a base coat- try the trick of setting the bottom of can in lukewarm water first as it will heat up the heavier paint and make mixing with propellant easier.
