Ekfud
Hi folks - I'm *pretty* sure I haven't missed this in Forge, but by all means steer me to a specific post if I have... Backstory: having just completed 20x marines on 32mm bases (paint almost literally still wet), and spent more time than expected building up urban rubble/wreckage on standard black bases... this week we find GW are about to release jumbo packs of imperial sector bases. http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2016/05/gw-new-releases-5-27-2016-first-looks.html With ~50 more marines to go in this force, I am sorely tempted to cut my losses on the hand-made ones and remove them; rebase on the new molded ones. Pains me to throw away some work, but it could save a lot of time on making the next 50, as well as get closer to 'city' rather than 'rubble' which probably suits as well. BUT... The problem: I did the 'right' thing though when putting the minis together and superglued the feet to base as well as putting a pin through the base into the leg (BOTH legs, being a bit OCD). So - I now have marines that could be exposed to thermonuclear activity (or 20 min in the microwave) and the last thing to survive would be the lower legs joined to the base... Assuming I want to keep the brand new paint on the mini (which is a fair assumption, as I do), what kind of options do I have to remove the existing pinned/superglued bases? Preferrably non-destructive on the bases too but intact mini is priority over saving the base... Thoughts?: while not tried out yet, so far I'm considering... a. flip the base over, tiny bit of nail polish remover on the pins sticking down, hope it loosens the bottom of the feet. wiggle until marine faceplants desk b. sit base in low water level of simple green - likely lose all the paint on the base, but can maybe limit this on mini to the 'rim' of the marines boots c. flip base over, use pliers to twist the pin and 'crack' the superglue (this sounds prone to issues); pull pins out and base is miraculously free? d. clip the black plastic base into small bits with clippers and prise off segments individually. cry (in manly way) about destroying the bases. If anyone has had some rebasing stories to share - good to get some thoughts before hitting the workbench... JayeL
If it was me, I would try and remove the pins with pliers. Next (I have never tried this, but have read it) pop the mini in the freezer overnight and allegedly the superglue becomes brittle and just snaps right off. I would maybe base up an old mini first, replicating what you've already done, and try the above method before moving on to your precious marines. Ekfud
Cheers, yeah - that is probably the go... Mechanical options vs chemical sounds more promising for protecting paint job. Can shift to option #4 if needs be. Might give the household a heads up on using the freezer too - finding 20 marines hiding in your frozen peas could be confronting.
