Magnetised Dark Talon/ Nephilim Fighter

Recommended Posts

I recently bought a Dark Talon/Nephilim Fighter, and since I had trouble deciding which variant to take, I just decided to magnetize the whole thing. I figured a tutorial would be helpful for the people that want to do something similar.

Note: I did not magnetize the bomb, heavy bolters or the thrusters underneath. I was too lazy to invest time in those and I liked the overall look of the options I glued on it. This tutorial covers the weapons underneath the wings and the nose-mounted cannons.

Materials used:

- Pieces of straight sprue.

- Glue (super and plastic)

- N52 3x2x1 Square magnets.

So let’s start with the nose.  During assembly of the cockpit, I glued a piece of sprue over the gap meant for the cannons.

When the cockpit was done, I glued 2 of the magnets inside the gap. I placed them as low as I could, since there is a slight tilt to the piece of sprue. Placing the magnets lower makes them sit deeper in the gap. Place them as far from each other as possible, because they will jump to each other while the glue is drying otherwise.

Placing the magnets on the cannons is trickier. I placed an additional magnet on each glued magnet to raise their surface. I dabbed some paint on the magent and placed the cannon the gap. The place of the magnets is now marked, which makes placing the magnets is a bit easier. If the magnets are too deep for the cannon to reach them, then add magnets until it does. You can remove the additional magnets ones the markings are made.

The dual Lascannons are done with the exaxt same methode. The Rift cannon however is harder to do, since it has a hollow back instead of the flat ones of the other 2 options. I placed a stack of magnets on the glued ones in the plane and kept placing more until the rift cannon couldn't was blocked from his place. Then I removed the last magnet so that the Rift cannon can be placed without interruption, and then I removed an additional magnet. I took the stack of magnets and used them as measurement to cut 2 pieces of sprue. Glue the slimmest sides of the 2 pieces together, and then glue the result in the hollow of the cannon. Now you have a decent surface to mount magnets on!

Next up, wingmounted weaponry.

This is the most difficult part of this assambly, since it involves some guessing. I cut some small pieces of sprue and cut one side into an angle to fit in the sides of the casing. The intention is make a sort of 'brace' so we have something to anchor the magnets on. You could ignore these blocks and just skip to the next step, but then you'd have to drill into the sprue to sink the magnets in. I took the lazy way out. There is no need to make the angle perfect, but do make sure that the whole assembly is sturdy enough, so try to avoid wobbly bits.

Similar to the nosepiece, I glued a piece of sprue in each of the casing underneath the wings. Make sure the broad side is facing the outside, the side of the weapons.

Then you glue magnets in each corner of the gap. You could just use one magnet for this assembly, I'm sure it would stay in place. But I like to place 2 as far apart as possible for the extra strength. It also reduces possible bending of the weaponmounts. I glued 2 magnets together to bridge the distance from sprue to weapon. You could use one 2mm magnet instead. The facing of the magnets doesn't really matter, but vertically works better for the Hurricanebolters, so consider that one above the other option.

Mounting the magnets on the weapons is easy. You can eyeball it or you can mark it with paint. The hurricanebolters more of a pain, since the backside of the bolters stick out of the mounts. I had to trim away these extras for the horizontal magnets, the vertical ones required no trimming.

I have a small gap between the magnets, but this isn't much of a problem. The pieces still snap right into place and it required a bit of force to get them apart again. Those tiny magnets are powerfull!

And that's it! If you magnetised the bomb and/or bolter as well, post it underneath and I'll place in the original post as well. I didn't bother with it.
