Crunch1945
Just wondering what kind/type of respirator to use when filing/sanding Resin/Plastic. If you guys could provide a link or name so I could find where to buy it that would be great as well. Thanks All Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/322977-question-on-respirator-masks-for-filing-resinplastic/ Share on other sites
Grotsmasha
Just those cheap paper ones at the painting section of any hardware store will do the trick. I've a friend who uses these, safety glasses, and sits one of those small handheld vacuum cleaners where he's filing/sanding/cutting and leaves it on the whole time. Major_Gilbear
This government website is pretty helpful in explaining what the different ratings are, and what will/won't protect you. I would suggest a mask with a rating of FFP2 or FFP3, an exhalation valve, and ensure that the mask you get fits you properly and comfortably. If you're making a big mess with resin dust, I would not remove the mask until you've cleaned up and wiped down relevant surfaces (otherwise you'll just be inhaling the dust you've swirled up into the air again during clean-up). Such masks are available as disposable types (cheap ~ £3-4) and as reusable types (more expensive ~ £12-30) . Personally, I use a silicone Moldex half-mask with replaceable filters. This is washable, will last me forever (just need to replace the filters from time to time), and suits for airbrushing and such too (you can get gas filters for solvent sprays, as well as combined multi-use filters). I mentioned cleaning up earlier; if you vacuum up any dust, you might want to be aware that emptying the bag/vacuum may release all that dust again, so I normally empty it out as well while I'm at it. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/322977-question-on-respirator-masks-for-filing-resinplastic/#findComment-4412997 Share on other sites

GalaxyChief
I find masks to be pretty irritating.... I wear them at work a lot. I have found that a box fan with a furnace filter taped to it helps a lot. You tape the filter to the 'intake' side of the fan and have it blow away from you. This will cause the flow of air to carry the airborne dust into the filter. You can also use this as an inexpensive spray booth. Teetengee
I have also heard of some people doing the trimming and filing of resin underwater, to catch the dust. m0nolith
I have also heard of some people doing the trimming and filing of resin underwater, to catch the dust. This. At least when it comes to filing. Trimmed resin dosent tend to float around so I dont even bother with a mask, however always file underwater.
