Why did you pick the Legion(s) you currently play?

I was all about World Eaters for a while, I really liked the idea of the sort of savage nobility that a WE could pull off.

But then they released the Horus sculpt and I fell in love.

Basically, my army is Sons of Horus because Horus himself was too glorious to resist

World Eaters

I waffled a lot on which legion to go with when I was thinking about starting a heresy army.  I kind of wanted to go with a loyalist legion since i have a chaos 40k army.  I always play the bad guys in other games so i kind of wanted to do somethig different.  I really liked the heroic nature of the loyalist marines like Loken and Garro in the novels.  But then i read Betrayer, twice, and knew that i was really a world eater at heart.  I love everything about the way Khârn in particular and the 12th in general is portrayed in Betrayer.  I really like the idea of their sense of noble brotherhood slowly being erroded away by the nails and their latent dissapointment with angron.  It was just such a breath of fresh air from the bromance fueled knee bending of the other legions.

Fluff aside, I love the blue and white armor and i love the spiked maw legion icon...i mean, c'mon, thats the best legion icon by far!

I play chaos/KDK in 40k so i really like the idea of being able to field Khârn and have him actually be useful.  I suppose i could say that about the army in general though, it lets me field a choppy army that is competitive.

For me, I have a weakness for elite versatile armies. I dithered for quite a while over which legion to pick, but in the end I had a bit of an idea for fluff, following on from reading The Lies of Locke Lamora (read it if you haven't. Fantastic book!) and settled on space jerks.

I mean alpha legion.

I love the pride, ambiguity, the hedging of the bets and the duality of the legion, it really resonates with me.

As to the legions that are looming on the not-too-distant horizon, world eaters, night lords and possibly word bearers, you have Aaron Dembski Bowden to thank for that. The character and soul of each of those legions has never been so wonderfully captured than in his work.

Really inspired me and made me want to carve a little slice of each of those legions for my own.

The Imperial Fists for two reasons one I am very much a loyalist and there dedication to the emperor and imperium stands out to me. Two Sigismund he is just a legend for me and a great leader. I like there rules and try to play to there strengths. With Sigi leading my brethren so far he has never failed me and has some very good scalps.

I do have a second army and that is Deathguard I just enjoy the way they play.

I've got a few factors that pushed me to join the Hunt with the Sons of Jaghatai.

I've always had a soft spot for the White Scars, ever since seeing Paul Sawyers fantastic biker-army way back at the outset of 3rd. ed. 40k. Secondly, the Scimitar Jetbike. That single sculpt made me want to go fast and strike hard. Third, the efforts of Chris Wraight in bringing the most elusive Vth. Legion to life, and their complexity, nobility and refusal to be moulded by the rigidity of the Imperium, while never straying from their own strongly defined path of rigtheousness as exemplified by the Khagan himself. Then the rules arrived earlier this year, I knew I'd chosen the right Legion in terms of playability as well.

Raven Guard.

Because they believed in fighting smart. Because they were almost wiped out. Because their primarch abandons them.

But mostly because i'm not sure how they would have responded to the heresy if it wasn't for Gate 42.

Three reasons for the Iron Hands.

1- IronHandsFanatic's amazing red-armed Marine mock-up. That image is the basis for my entire army's style.
2- Mathew Kane's paint work on the FW site.

3- Ferrus goddamn Manus' model. It's still the best Primarch by far, and I never get to use him enough.

World Eaters and Dark Angels... they are the armies I used to play in 40k since... who remembers.

Puberty happened, and with my first, shy prototype of a beard, they were there, too.

There can be other projects, but these two will always be "my armies" by default.

It wasn't even a choice!

My problem is that I actually don't have a favourite Legion. I like them all. Hence I usually go with what feels right as my next Legion, mostly if I like a recently released model for them, or if it fits as a counter for my other armies.

Death Guard:

My DG was my first 30k army, and I choosed them because they had the most stuff back then, released as models - Death Shroud, Grave Wardens, Mortarion and Typhon. Since I wanted to do an army representing Typhons company anyways, this was an easy choice. Terminators, tanks and a Knight. Also, I think they are what comes a "favourite Legion" next for me. My first 40k models I painted (or better said .... tried to, as a kid) were old 2nd edition Plague Marines after all ^_^

Salamanders:

Counter for my DG army, i like green and they too had a good bunch of Legion specific stuff when I started them. Also, after the DG, I needed something where I could do something with green stuff (scales ftw!).

Word Bearers:

Started them with BaC, in order to be able to play the game with my Sweety. They also are basically CSM's already, pretty cool - and Daemons. I love Daemons.

My next Legions will be Raven Guard, followed by Ultramarines and Iron Warriors ^.^

Corax was never going to turn, even if it wasn't for Gate 42, he's as loyal as the day is long.

However his legion? A Terran/Deliverance civil war could of been brutal and interesting or would Corax of just sent out the Terrans on crusade like he did with Shade Lord Arkhas Fal? One of my pet theories is that the Charcaradons are the descendants of Fal's forces.

One likely theory is that the Terrans would of been sent out on crusade but perhaps returned to Horus' banner?

Blood angels because... well... blood angels...

we are gorgeous

and i dare say the best fighters in the imperium.

and we are gorgeous

and we are not complete douche bags to the people we are sworn to protect.

did i mention about how gorgeous we are?

To quote myself:

My love for the Iron Hands started with "Bionic Space Marines? censored.gif yeah!" , but as I read more about them, they evoked the Grim-Darkness of the setting so fantastically I couldn't resist. Clinical, remorseless warriors who revile the very flesh that makes them, who are constantly pushing to replace their flawed flesh with the perfection of the machine? Glorius.

Even when the whole 'The Flesh is Weak' mantra is removed for the Great Crusade & Heresy, the Xth Legion is still incredibly grim. They're an inch away from being a traitor Legion. They're polar opposites to the humanitarian, moral Salamanders to whom they're so commonly compared. The Clan system means they even hate each other. With Ferrus' death, they will stop at nothing to exact vengeance - they'll resort to measures which even the traitor Legions would have qualms with.

The Iron Hands are the vilest, most brutal of the Loyalist Legions by a mile. Boy do I dig that.

Edit: also, we nuke population centres and drop moons on people - huh, what's that, "proportional response"? Never heard of it tongue.png

I'm sick of painting white after several squads and vehicles belonging to the World Eaters and I can't even tell my Raven Guard models apart with all the black, so I settled on the last member of my loyalist triumvirate: Salamanders.

Also War Hounds because even I feel to need to be a special snowflake from times to times. But mainly because I wanted Legio XII without white, I even painted their white parts black instead.

Let's be honest mate, there is a dark, secret corner of everyone's soul in which the Night Lords find a haven.
