Hey everyone

 

I've decided to try and document my Sons of Horus project that I am starting, to keep me motivated and hopefully get some useful feedback and suggestions from the community.

 

This is my first HH army, I have 40k Iron Hands and Tau, which I have ended up painting out of necessity for campaigns/tournaments, rather than because I enjoy the scheme! I am planning for this to be much more of a hobby project with less competitive games and more time spent painting and modelling.

 

So far I've got 1 calth box, 5 reavers, Abaddon, a deredeo and the SoH contemptor, plus a load of accessories & weapons.

 

My list will be built around the Long March RoW, using Abaddon, Maloghurst and 2-3 large units of jump pack reavers.

 

 

Below is my first test model that I'm reasonably happy with.

I had originally planned to base the model with Lupercal green and zenith highlight with an airbrush, using Sons of Horus green. This didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped and I ended up changing my recipe a bit.

 

 

The test model was painted using the following steps:

 

1. Black primer

2. Sons of Horus Green

3. 50/50 mix of agrax earthshade/nuln oil, thinned slightly, being careful to remove pooling 

4. leadbelcher on the metal work, followed by nuln oil

5. sycorax bronze on the shoulder trim

6. leadbelcher & dark grey sponged on lightly

7. light earth weathering powder

 

I'm pretty happy with the result, the green is a bit patchy, which could be fixed by doing a gloss varnish before the wash. 

 

The brown edge on the base doesn't look right, I think it needs to be a less "reddy" brown and more of a dark dusty brown.

 

 

I am not 100% which parts of the armour should be black, i've seen images of shoulder pads, knee pads so I will have to research this a bit more.

Quick update, it's been a while, but I've managed to get this all built:

 

2x 15 reavers with jump packs and assault weapons

1x 10 man heavy support squad with missile launchers

5 justaerin

Abaddon

Maloghurst

contemptor dread

 

Still to build:

Leviathan dreadnought

another contemptor

2x 10 veteran tactical marines
