thevoodooman
So I'm finally ready to paint my Knights and I want to do something a little more than simply paint them silver and ink on top. That being said I'm really not the best painter so wondering if anyone has any suggestions please? Myunch
This may not be what you're looking for, but as far as painting goes, I found that proper paint thinning was the key. Also as far as paint schemes go, I've seen a few where white is replaced by silver (I think a member named Varchilde painted them) and another where the red was replaced with a purple of sorts, looked really good. varchilde
Some one called? :) Silver then wash is absolutely fine as a starting point; that's what I use for my scheme: Army Painter Plate metal with a blue then thinned black wash over the top. May be touch up the armour if the wash has stained too much. Then for me it's about picking out detail (I use gold for the inlaid text for example), and using spot colours to help break up the wall of silver. I typically use red (inquisition association), blue for the nemesis weapons, and black for pads, helmet crests. Myunch mentioned my use of white. I think he's referring to my purifiers: I've used Deneb stone (now Rakarth Flesh?) on the helmets and shoulder pads. Blue wash into the recesses, then touch up with Deneb again. White edge highlights. Hope that helps. Happy to answer any other questions. duz_
Has anyone tried the new gloss wash instead of the regular nulin oil yet? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323236-painting-grey-knights/#findComment-4421860 Share on other sites
Kolvin
No, but according to what we see on the Web it seems to give a cleaner finish. My guys are all painted so I won't be exploring that but if you're starting a new force it could be something to look into. Trollbeard
Hey varchilde, when painting your Knights do you paint them as a single model completely before starting a new? Or do all the base coats and then all the highlighting ETC on the whole squad? duz_
Batch painting will save you a bit of time Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323236-painting-grey-knights/#findComment-4423455 Share on other sites
varchilde
I batch paint my models, usually a squad at a time, in the manner you suggest; it does save a lot of time. I make an exception for bigger models, HQs and vehicles. I usually do those individually. varchilde
So as promised a pic or two with models using the new gloss nuln oil. These 3 models are my current ETL vow. First up: Librarian, sprayed with Army Painter Plate metal. Second: Brother Captain, same AP spray, application of gloss nuln over the top. The metal has definitely kept it's shine. Finally: Librarian, same AP spray, liberal wash of drakenhof (sp?) nightshade (so blue), then gloss nuln over the top. I usually go AP spray, blue wash, thinned black wash, but I'm kind of digging the 2nd libby model so will go that route for all 3 of my ETL models. And as a bonus I've used Soulstone blue on the skull of the warding staff. That does look quite cool as well; I might do an armour panel or two on the libbies with the soulstone just as a nod back to the Librarium :P Enjoy!
