Best Iron Warriors 30K novel, novella or short story?

Friend wants to get into 30K, possibly Iron Warriors and is looking for fluff regarding them.

I've read all the Tallarn novels, and various other shorts like Iron Within, etc.

But the problem with that, is that it's all one big arc in my head now.

Was there any one particular novel, novella, or short that stands out, that I could recommend to my friend?

He's familiar with the general 30K premise, Horus, Isstvan, Battle of Terra, etc. but hasn't actually read any of the HH books.

Thanks!

I'd push him on The Iron Within first off, particularly if you have a copy of the anthology to lend him. It's short, it's good writing, it's got siegecraft, a decent look at the IW philosophy and the pain of betrayal. Above all, Dantioch's a badass.

Seconded, The Iron Within is an awesome short story and Dantioch a great lead character, would be nice to have his backstory fleshed out one day but i think we're prob past that point now.

As everyone else has already stated too, Angel Exterminatus has some great moments and for me Perturabo in this novel is a very likable character. Reading The Crimson Fist before Exterminatus would be advisible too as it will put into context certain events / characters circumstances. I hope McNeil returns to the Iron Warriors again at some point in the future!

Angel Exterminatus. No question about that

Ironfire is a nice short, but merely filler

"Filler" in the context of the series, maybe, though I wouldn't describe many stories as clear filler as they all contribute something or bridge gaps.

The question wasn't about what's essential to the series, however. It was about what stories depict the Iron Warriors during the GC/HH well.

Ironfire shows the Iron Warriors' pragmatism and obsession with siege warfare in a way that few other stories bar The Iron Within do. It adds a lot to their overall, changing character as the Heresy progresses.
